Following his on-air criticism of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, CNN anchor Don Lemon will return to work on Wednesday and undergo “Formal training,” according to an email from network CEO Chris Licht to staff members sent on Monday evening.
Since stating on “CNN This Morning” on Thursday that 51-year-old Haley was not “In her prime,” Lemon has not been on the air. In a conversation with fellow hosts Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, Lemon brought up Haley’s idea that politicians over 75 should be required to pass mental competency exams.
Lemon apologized and said, “Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime, sorry,” adding that he was “Uncomfortable” with the topic of age.
“Don’t shoot the messenger; I’m just saying what the facts are,” Lemon responded.
Lemon issued a statement that same day saying he regretted his “Inartful and irrelevant” comments, which were widely condemned.
The New York Times reports that during a Friday editorial call, Licht reprimanded Lemon, calling his comments “upsetting, unacceptable, and unfair” and a “Huge distraction.” CNN reported that Lemon attended the meeting and offered his regrets to the staff.
Harlow said at the top of Tuesday morning’s show that Lemon would return the next day.
