CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL) is getting ready for one of its biggest days of the year — the 11th annual Dick Goddard APL Telethon.

The event airs on Fox 8 Wednesday, Sept. 10th, and raises money to support the thousands of animals the Cleveland APL cares for each year.

“The excitement is really high,” said Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the Cleveland APL. “This is such a wonderful day — sharing our mission with the community.”

The APL is a state-of-the-art animal shelter on Wiley Avenue that prepares animals for adoption, finds them loving homes and also handles humane law enforcement across Cuyahoga County.

Harvey said donations from the telethon will support life-saving programs and services, as well as the APL’s commitment to never euthanize animals to make room for new arrivals.

“That means animals may have a longer length of stay with us,” Harvey explained. “It’s a constant balancing act that shelters all around us are facing.”

Last year’s telethon raised nearly $185,000. Over the past decade, the event has brought in more than $1.7 million to help Northeast Ohio’s animals in need.

The fundraiser also honors the late Fox 8 legend Dick Goddard, whose name and advocacy remain central to the cause. “We at the Cleveland APL miss Dick Goddard and his passionate advocacy for the four-footed,” Harvey said. “It is such an honor and privilege to have his name associated with this event. His unwavering dedication to protecting animals contributed so much to their welfare in this community and beyond.”
