CLEVELAND (WJW) — Twenty-three people were killed in vehicle crashes on Ohio highways over the long holiday weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) reported Tuesday.

The deaths were a part of 20 crashes, which took place between midnight Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday, at least four of which OSHP said involved impaired drivers.

Holiday weekends, when people are more likely to travel for events and family gatherings, often involve an uptick in traffic collisions. Overall, OSHP said there were 490 crashes this Labor Day weekend, down from 519 the year previous. There were 18 fatalities in 2024.

Cuyhaoga County had the fourth most “incidents” over the weekend, including crashes, arrests, traffic violations and more, as seen in the chart below:

Troopers reportedly made nearly 400 impaired driving arrests over the weekend.

“Motorists are encouraged to contribute to a safer Ohio by calling #677 to report drug activity and dangerous or impaired driving on Ohio roadways,” OSHP said in a statement.
