Dave Portnoy offered his unsolicited opinion on the ongoing controversy over President Donald Trump’s remark regarding the United States women’s hockey team.
Portnoy, 48, appeared on the Monday, February 23, episode of Wake Up Barstool, where he addressed Trump, 79, calling the U.S. men’s hockey team after their victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics. During the call, Trump invited them to attend the State of the Union address and mentioned he would be “impeached” if he didn’t also extend an invite to the gold-winning women’s team as well, sparking controversy and offending many.
“People are mad, they’re going nuts. ‘How could the hockey team laugh, why are they talking to the president?’ This should be a barometer of whether you’re a psychopath,” Portnoy said. “If the president calls after you win the gold medal. I don’t care, if you don’t want to talk to him, fine. But to get mad when [someone] talks to the President of the United States, and he’s just congratulating them [and] chumming around.”
“If this speech made you mad, you need to take a valium and maybe just take a thousand steps back,” he added. “Because there’s nothing to be mad about when a president congratulates a gold medal-winning team.”
While the men’s hockey team plans to attend the State of the Union, the women’s hockey team respectfully declined the offer following Trump’s comments.
“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” a USA Hockey spokesperson said, via NBC News. “Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”
“They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment,” the spokesperson added.
The U.S. Women’s Hockey Team still plan to celebrate their incredible feat, however: Flavor Flav announced on Instagram that they “accepted [his] invitation to celebrate in Las Vegas.”
