“The unsung heroes are the silent architects of a better world.” – Unknown
As Women’s Month unfolds in South Africa, we are taking the time to shine a light on the remarkable women who contribute to crafting unforgettable experiences and #TheLondoloziEffect we as guests and staff alike, so fondly speak of. While the wonders of the wild steal the spotlight on game drives, there exists a group of hidden heroines who weave their magic through your entire stay, often without you even knowing – The Housekeepers. In this tribute, I’ll delve into the days of these exceptional women and acknowledge the indelible mark they leave on the memories made during a stay at Londolozi.
The Magic of House Keepers
Like Weavers creating intricate nests in century-old trees, housekeepers are the weavers of comfort and delicate details within the walls of Londolozi. As soon as the fleet of Land Rovers has rolled out the camp car park to embarked on the daily adventures and all is quiet in camp once more, the Housekeepers begin their descent. Armed with brooms and brushes and sprays, they restore your cocoons to sanctuaries of peace and tranquillity.
They fold the crisp linens, fluff the pillows, hang fresh towels and artfully arrange the amenities. Their expert eye ensures that you return from your safari escapade to a haven that exudes warmth and care; a home away from home. These women take pride in ensuring that every detail is perfect, anticipating your needs before you even realise them yourself; a dreamy duvet gracefully folded back invites you to rest, while a gently dropped mosquito net ensures peaceful slumber. A thoughtful and knowing touch places your choice of still or sparkling water beside your bed, and your slippers lovingly await below your gown.
In many cultures, women are associated with nurturing qualities, and the Housekeepers at Londolozi embody these traits wholeheartedly. Most often waving their wand from behind the scenes and perhaps never even spotted during your stay, it is precisely the unseen frequency of their efforts that make your experiences at Londolozi so unforgettable. Through their service, the Housekeepers elevate the standard and quality of stays, and contribute significantly to the overall reputation of Londolozi. A Housekeeper’s role may be silent, but its impact reverberates throughout the hospitality landscape, leaving a lasting mark on the guests they serve and the industry they uplift.
But that’s not all they do – these remarkable women are not confined to just one arena. Many of them have side hustles and micro businesses, showcasing their incredible entrepreneurial spirit. A significant portion of the enchanting Londolozi Ladies Choir comprises the very same women who diligently work their magic in the laundry. A lot of these women also tend to vibrant vegetable gardens in the Village, cultivating a range of lush leafy greens and herbs that find their way into the heart of the Londolozi Kitchen. Imagine, the same hands that tend to your quarters also nurture the ingredients that flavour your meals. These ladies are true artisans of influence, sprinkling their expertise and dedication throughout the Londolozi experience, ensuring that your stay is infused with their special touch in more ways than one.
The presence (or unseen frequency) of Lillian, Jenna and Victoria’s team is akin to a gentle guiding hand, orchestrating an experience that seamlessly blends luxury and adventure. And, just like the weavers’ nests are masterpieces hanging hidden in the trees, the housekeepers’ artistry lies cocooned within the camp.
So, as you come home again to your cocoon of comfort at Londolozi, take a moment to honour the exceptional women behind the scenes – the Housekeepers, the magicians of hospitality who make dreams come true, one perfectly made bed at a time.
Happy Women’s Day to all the hidden heroines in our lives!
