Gastronomic legend Ina Garten, 74, spoke with CBS News’ Sharyn Alfonsi for 60 Minutes about her life and times. Here are some things we learned:

  • Her 13 cookbooks have sold millions of copies and become 10 New York Times Bestsellers, and her weekly television show has run for two decades and earned seven Emmy awards.
  • Prior to her culinary career, she had a job at the White House, analyzing nuclear energy policy for the Ford administration.
  • She never went to cooking school. She read Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” after backpacking in France.
  • She describes herself as a “nervous, not confident” cook and follows recipes precisely
  • From 1978-1996, she owned a line of “specialty food stores” in the Hamptons. Ina said she was working 20 hours a day to keep up with the crowds who came to gawk at the goods and load up on lobster salad.
  • She describes her cooking show as “intimate”, stating, “I think people feel like they’re just hanging out with me and I’m cooking for them.”
  • Husband Jeffrey had a successful career on Wall Street and served as the dean of Yale’s business school
  • Purports to have cocktails “a couple of times a day” with Jeffrey.
