After weeks of teasing a move to a “legendary newsroom,” California TV reporter Erin Heft has finally revealed where she’s headed.
“The new chapter begins today! I’m incredibly honored to join this legendary team!” Heft wrote on social media. “Cheers to everything ahead!”
The announcement answers the question Heft left open last month when she bid farewell to KCRA after five years, telling viewers she was leaving for a “dream position” at a “legendary newsroom” in Dallas.
“I never thought this day would come,” Heft said during her farewell broadcast. “I’m filled with grief, but I’m so excited for this next chapter. Dallas is very close to my family, and it is a massive jump in news markets.”
Speaking with Chron, Heft said WFAA’s reputation made the decision an easy one.
“WFAA’s legacy of dedication and journalistic excellence drew me to the station,” she said. “I’m incredibly thrilled to be invited to report among such highly respected journalists.”
The move also brings her much closer to home.
“I’m ecstatic to be back within a couple hours of my parents and little brother,” Heft said. “Also Tex-Mex, HEB and Texas BBQ are pretty hard to live without.”
Before joining WFAA, Heft spent five years at KCRA 3 in Sacramento, where she worked as a reporter, fill-in anchor and fill-in traffic anchor. During that time, the Emmy Award-winning journalist covered historically devastating wildfires, the Sacramento area’s largest mass shooting, high-profile court verdicts and other major breaking news.
Her return to Texas also marks a homecoming of sorts. Before moving to California in 2021, Heft spent nearly three years at 25 News KXXV in Waco, Temple and Killeen as a multimedia journalist and fill-in anchor.
Heft said viewers can expect to see her reporting Tuesday through Saturday, covering a wide range of stories.
“On my workdays I’ll be reporting on everything coming across my desk,” she said.
A graduate of Arizona State University, Heft earned dual bachelor’s degrees in journalism and human communication, along with minors in media law and analysis and political science. Earlier in her career, she worked with the San Diego Padres, covered the team for SB Nation’s Gaslamp Ball and held reporting roles with Golding Publications and KCRA.
