Law enforcement in Tuscaloosa announced Monday that University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting near the campus Sunday that killed a 23-year-old woman.

“We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team,” said the University of Alabama athletics department.

According to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, Michael Lynn Davis, 20, was also charged with the shooting. Both suspects face a capital murder charge and are being held without bond.

As far as investigators know, Miles is the only person associated with the University of Alabama.

According to the university’s violent crimes unit, Jamea Jonae Harris was shot and killed around 1:45 a.m. local time Sunday while sitting in a car near the university’s campus.

Police said the car driver returned fire in self-defense after someone shot into his vehicle, possibly striking one of the suspects.

“After processing the scenes, speaking with multiple witnesses, and viewing video surveillance, two suspects were developed,” the release said.

According to investigators, one of the suspects was wounded by the return gunfire but not in a life-threatening manner.

“It appears that the only motive to this was a minor altercation these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip,” said unit captain Jack Kennedy.
