A $13 million driving course could soon be used to train deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Planned for 2316 Atascocita Road in Humble, the project includes 6,211 square feet, featuring a small building and a driving track.
While details submitted to the TDLR are subject to change, construction could begin this November. Houston-based Kimley-Horn is the listed design firm.
“Harris County does not have a dedicated precision driving course for law enforcement training. Yet, officers and first responders spend much of their time in vehicles, and many injuries and fatalities involve vehicle-related incidents,” the website reads.
The D. R. I. V. E Center will not only be used by the HCSO, but also the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Harris County Constables’ offices in precincts one through eight.
“Training will cover a wide range of scenarios, such as pursuits, felony stops, and adverse weather conditions,” according to the website. “The course will include a cone course pad, a simulated urban street driving area, a precision driving track, and classroom and support facilities.”
Renderings of the facility show a modern, two-story design with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, outdoor observation areas, vehicle bays, an expansive outdoor driving course, individual workstations, wall-mounted display monitors and agency branding.
The project is funded by a voter-approved bond and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2027.
