The TDLR filing estimates the project will cost $42.8 million. In addition to the academic building, plans include surrounding landscape improvements. Lake Flato Architects is listed as the project’s design firm.
University officials told Chron in an emailed response that the building is intended to support the Hobby School’s rapid as well as “remarkable growth” and provide additional space for academic programs, research and community partnerships.
Undergraduate enrollment has also increased by more than 700 percent since the school launched its bachelor’s degree in public policy in 2022, UH officials said. Graduate enrollment has grown nearly 850 percent since the Master of Public Policy program debuted in 2015.
“The Hobby School of Public Affairs not only educates future policy leaders, but it also empowers government, industry and everyday Houstonians with critical knowledge and guidance on key issues,” University of Houston Chancellor Renu Khator said in a statement. “This expansive new building will enable the Hobby School to increase its research and student body, enhancing its impact across Houston, Texas and the world.”
Construction began in April 2026, according to the TDLR filing, and is scheduled for completion in July 2028.
