Not every dog gets a safe start in life. Some are abandoned before they’ve even had the chance to know what love feels like. Ellie and Jett were two of those dogs until compassionate rescuers stepped in, refusing to let their story end in tragedy.
These young shepherd mixes are two of the 22 dogs preparing to leave Texas on iHeartDogs’ August Rescue Road Trip. Their destination is Colorado, where waiting shelters, rescue partners, foster families, and adopters have the space to give them the fresh start they couldn’t find at home.

A Heartbreaking Beginning
When Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK) received a plea from Drowzy Dawg Rescue, the situation was already tragic. Three young puppies had been abandoned in Grandview, Texas. Before help could arrive, one of them was struck by a vehicle and lost his life.
The two surviving siblings, later named Ellie and Jett, were rescued by a compassionate 70-year-old woman who simply couldn’t leave them behind. She quickly discovered what anyone who meets them can see: they are gentle, affectionate puppies who only want love.
They were also growing fast, and, as playful shepherd puppies, they accidentally knocked the frail woman over several times while playing. Fearing she would be seriously injured, she reached out to local law enforcement for help. According to the woman, she was told to shoot them.
Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of Ellie and Jett’s story.
Rescue Happens When People Say “Yes”
Instead of giving up, people came together. A Drowzy Dawg Rescue foster immediately stepped in, giving the siblings a safe place to spend the night and beginning their veterinary care. The following day, volunteers transported them to BARK Rescue Kennels, where they finally had the opportunity to begin the lives every puppy deserves.
Ellie has already been spayed. Jett is scheduled to be neutered before the trip. Both are receiving vaccinations, medical care, and all the preparation they need before heading north.
Today, they’re thriving in foster care, showing off the sweet, loving personalities that first captured everyone’s hearts. One small detail says everything about who they are: when it’s time to eat, Jett patiently waits while Ellie finishes her meal before he begins his own.
Why Colorado?
Ellie and Jett’s story is one of thousands unfolding across Texas. Animal shelters throughout the state are overflowing, forcing rescuers to make impossible decisions every day simply because there aren’t enough adopters or available kennel spaces.
Colorado tells a different story. Partner shelters and rescues there have room to welcome dogs like Ellie and Jett, and families waiting to adopt.
That’s why BARK’s August Rescue Road Trip matters so much. Rather than watching wonderful dogs run out of time, BARK’s rescue team is loading 22 deserving dogs into transport vans and driving hundreds of miles to places where hope still exists.
The journey is long, but every mile brings these dogs closer to the love and safety all pets deserve.

Ellie and Jett are only two faces among the 22 dogs making this incredible journey. Some are young puppies. Others narrowly escaped euthanasia. All have waited far too long for a soft place to land.
Every dog on this transport has a story worth telling and a future worth fighting for. While the trip requires hundreds of miles on the road, fuel, vehicle maintenance, veterinary care, and careful coordination between multiple rescue organizations, it’s also proof of what happens when people work together.
