Who cares for injured ants in a colony?

Carpenter ants amputate injured legs to reduce infection risk, and a Würzburg-led study found that the ants most likely to do this are workers transitioning from brood care to foraging. Researchers tracked six colonies and found that these more socially connected ants were the main caregivers for wounded nestmates.
