CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has found the City of Cleveland has gone to court to try to close another bar declaring it a nuisance.
The city filed a complaint outlining a history of trouble and liquor violations at Filter located at 740 W. Superior.
This comes weeks after the city took action to close Play Bar and Grill in the Flats following a shooting in the street that left 6 people hurt.
Court records show a judge has issued a temporary restraining order against Filter Restaurant Experience LLC allowing the club to be shut down at least until a hearing.
The city’s complaint says Filter “has been the site of constant illegal activity, including numerous violations of the State’s liquor laws.”
Police say, in June, a man was shot and killed while walking from the nightclub to his vehicle.
Police say another shooting happened outside there last month.
The court complaint also says, last month, police arrested a security guard when he wouldn’t allow investigators inside to do a liquor inspection.
And, investigators say, during a liquor inspection in November, they found marijuana in cooler. The complaint says, “The marijuana confiscated was approximately 10.5 pounds.”
The I-Team contacted the owner of Filter. He told us he is not yet prepared to comment on the city’s action.
The establishment made headlines back in 2023 after a robbery just outside Filter.
Former Browns Defensive Lineman Perrion Winfrey told police six men wearing masks jumped out of a car then robbed him and another man at gunpoint. The suspects then stole a truck belonging to former Defensive Back Greg Newsome II.
Newsome told detectives he was still inside the bar when the robbery took place. Newsome said no one was injured.
Meantime, the owners of Play Bar and Grill have been battling the city in court over getting shut down claiming the recent mass shooting had nothing to do with their business.
And Play Bar and Grill owner David Hill also disputes over recent examples of trouble outlined by the city.
Hill told the I-Team, Aany of those issues we’ve never received not one police report or any kind of questioning about it.”
A teen suspect was arrested Friday in connection with that shooting.
