CLEVELAND (WJW) – The city of Cleveland has approved a plan to reduce the speed limit on Lake Avenue from 35 mph to 30 mph, a change many residents say is long overdue.
“I see how people drive through here currently,” Finn O’Hern said. “It’s all about safety — they have school kids and all that around here.”
The reduction will stretch from West 75th Street to West 117th Street at the Lakewood border. Ward 15 Councilwoman Jenny Spencer said the decision followed a traffic study and review by state officials.
“Municipalities must do speed and traffic studies and then go through ODOT’s process,” Spencer explained, adding that “even just a five-mph reduction in speed can make a tremendous difference in traffic safety.”
The move mirrors a similar change made last year on Lakewood’s side of Lake Avenue, where the speed limit was also reduced to 30 mph.
Spencer hopes Cleveland’s change will take effect by the end of the year. She said the goal is to make the heavily traveled corridor safer for everyone.
“This is a residential neighborhood. People use it as a connector, but this is absolutely a neighborhood street,” Spencer said. “This will make it safer for people driving, walking, biking — no doubt.”
