CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has welcomed a brand new animal — a sweet baby red panda.
Calling the baby a “tiny, fluffy surprise,” the zoo announced Tuesday the birth took place July 3 to parents Poppy and Willie.
“This baby red panda is just over 2 months old and is healthy, curious and already stealing the hearts of our animal care team,” the zoo wrote in a social media statement.
Friday, the zoo announced the fluffball’s new name, as selected by mom Poppy (see how here). The baby girl’s name is Leela!
The zoo said in a social media post the baby still “isn’t quite ready to walk out on her own but is building strength everyday and will be more visible in the coming weeks.”
The red panda is considered endangered and in the wild can be found in the Himalayas and parts of China.
At the Cleveland Zoo, the red pandas habitat can be found in the Asian Highlands.
