Shoreway to close this week for 'urgent' repairs

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Memorial Shoreway is expected to be closed after Friday morning rush hour, to allow for “urgent repairs” to a damaged water main beneath the roadway.

A water main break last week near West 45th Street caused “significant flooding” and has been stymying traffic for days.

To accommodate repairs, state Route 2’s eastbound lanes are scheduled to close from West 45th Street to West 28th Street, starting at about 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, according to a Wednesday news release from the city.

The eastbound lanes will remain closed through the weekend and are set to reopen on Monday, Sept. 15, before the morning commute, according to the release.

The westbound lanes will remain fully open while the repairs are underway, according to the release.

Officials said motorists heading downtown — the Cleveland Guardians host the Chicago White Sox on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — have a couple different options as detours:

  • Detroit Avenue to local north and south connectors like West 25th Street or West 9th Street and Huron Road.

The closure will not affect the Edgewater Park beach or marina, according to the release.

“We thank drivers for their patience and encourage everyone to plan ahead,” reads the release.
