Fallen Cleveland officer remembered, given the department's highest honors

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Fox 8 I-Team was rolling its cameras as Cleveland police awarded some of the department’s highest honors to fallen officer Jamieson Ritter, who was killed in the line of duty on July 4, 2024.

Police officials awarded Jamieson Ritter the police star for his sacrifice during an awards ceremony Friday. His family accepted the medal as everyone in the ceremony gave a standing ovation.

“We’re very proud,” said Jon Ritter, Jamieson’s father, who attended the event with other family members.

Jamieson’s parents said they want their son to always be remembered.

Jamieson was shot and killed last year trying to arrest a wanted man.

During Friday’s event, Jamieson and other officers were also awarded for going above and beyond in other calls, including was just weeks before he was murdered. Jamieson Ritter and fellow officers helped save a man who had been shot, and they also received a commendation for helping save a man who went into the Cuyahoga River.

Ritter’s family say they are reminded again that he died a hero.

“Jamieson was brave every time that he worked,” said Jon Ritter. “He worked with a great group of people in the city of Cleveland. He was recognized for things in March and May of last year.  So it’s good to find these things and see these things.”

Months ago, the parents of officer Ritter filed formal complaints against the Cleveland police chief and police brass. Saying, in part, on the night of the deadly shooting Jamieson Ritter had faced unnecessary risks. Pointing out that they believe police should have called in a SWAT Team or fugitive squad to handle that call.

All of this comes with the family and so many people still waiting for justice for the murder of officer Ritter. We’ve shown you there are still questions on whether or not the suspect in the case is mentally competent to stand trial. Another hearing on the case is soon.

But on Friday, medal after medal shows Jamieson made going above and beyond routine.
