Thousands raised for families of Lorain officers through community

CLEVELAND — Community members rallied alongside several northeast Ohio McDonald’s and were able to raise over $15,000 for the families of the fallen and injured officers of the Lorain Police Department.

Local owner/operator Jason Payne led the fundraising, saying that 20% of digital sales at his 23 participating restaurants on Aug. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. were donated to the cause. In total, $15,138 was raised for the Officer’s Charitable Foundation.

“Northeast Ohio truly showed its heart,” said Payne in a news release. “From every mobile order to every kiosk purchase and social media share, our community came together to make a real difference for families who need us most. We are so grateful for the outpouring of support and for standing alongside our officers and their loved ones.”

The participating locations included Fairview Park, North Olmsted, Grafton, LaGrange, Oberlin, New London, Willard, Huron, Milan, Vermilion, both North Ridgeville locations, Lakewood, on W. 117th St., Lorain, at 1725 Henderson Dr and 3221 Oberlin Ave, both Painesville locations, 95 Richmond St & 1582 Mentor Ave, both Norwalk locations and all Sandusky locations.

At the Lorain location on Henderson Drive, staff brought breakfast sandwiches and free meal cards for officers to the Lorain Police Department and the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office. 

The procession for fallen officer Phillip Wagner went by the North Ridgeville McDonald’s on Center Ridge Road, where flags were handed out to neighbors and customers to line the roadway.
