Browns file suit against Cleveland to clear way for move to Brook Park: I-Team

CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has found the Browns have filed suit against the city of Cleveland, hoping a federal judge will clear the way for the team to move to a dome in Brook Park.

We revealed the city had planned legal action to block the team from moving, but now this.

Meanwhile, the city of Brook Park is moving ahead with plans for the dome. Walk into Express Deli, you hear the excitement about the Browns’ plans.

“I don’t have inside information, but I do have very good sandwiches,” said Micho Aboukhaled at the deli. “We’re just excited to see what developments are going to happen. What people are going to come in from out of town.”

The I-Team has found the town is taking action to get ready for a dome even though a court fight could stop the Browns from moving out of Cleveland.

“We’re going to continue to act as if this is coming here,” Brook Park Mayor Ed Orcutt said.

The mayor says he’s building what he calls a standard operating procedure for game days and other events in a dome.

Meanwhile, we’ve learned the Browns have been studying the impact of more traffic on the highways around the dome site.

Brook Park has also looked at creating about 14,000 parking spaces.

“We have to recruit other people that would be hired by the Cleveland Browns for security,” the mayor said. “Build that standard operating procedure, and then for the increased operational costs for the city of Brook Park, I’m working on another division for traffic control that would be able to handle the traffic.”

Earlier this week, the I-Team revealed the city of Cleveland planned to go to court to block the Browns from moving.

“This is not the end of the story,” law director Mark Griffin said.

The city of Cleveland planned to send the Browns a letter. Then, the city would file a lawsuit based on a Ohio law, called the “Modell law” that restricts sports teams from moving.

But the Browns took the first legal action, calling on a judge to throw out that law.

The Browns have argued a dome would be good for the team and good for the entire region.

Even the folks at Express Deli are watching progress on the project.

“Whatever the big bosses decide, I think that’s great. I think it’s just a matter of figuring out where we fit into the puzzle,” said Aboukhaled.

The Browns have a lease to play in their stadium in Cleveland through 2028.
