(WJW) — They’re among the best of what Cleveland sports have to offer.

And in October, five people who overcame personal and societal hurdles will be inducted into the 2024 class of the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.

GCSHF announced this year’s inductees in a press release Tuesday.

This year’s class is:

  • Wayne Embry: A five-time NBA all-star. He was vice president and general manager of the Cavs from 1985 to 1992. Embry was also the NBA’s first African American to hold the GM position and that of Cavs team president.
  • Holly Koester: An Army veteran who was the first person to complete a marathon in all 50 states from a wheelchair. Koester is a six-time gold medal winner at the 2016 National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
  • Anderson Varejao: He spent 13 years with the Cavaliers and was one of Cleveland’s all-time favorite players. He was on the NBA All-Defensive 2nd team and was a gold medal winner in the 2003 Pan American Games.
  • Cheryl White (1953-2019): White had over 750 wins in her career, including the first woman to win five races in one day. She was the first female Black jockey in the country at the age of 17. Her pioneering ride was at Thistledown Racetrack in 1971.
  • Jim Donovan: Donovan has been a local sports anchor since 1986 and has been Cleveland Browns radio announcer since 1999. He’s a three-time Emmy award winner and is in the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will take place Oct .15 at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower.

The recipients of the Jack Herrick Youth Sports Fund grants will also be announced.
