CC Sabathia hosts local youth baseball camp

CLEVELAND (WJW) – It’s about the fundamentals — the little things that can win big games.

But somewhere deep inside a 12-year-old’s heart of hearts, they believe that right now they can still hit it like Jose Ramirez.

“I’m learning how to do infield, picking up the ball and throwing it and I’m learning how to hit too,” camper Truu Haynes said.

Truu is 12 and he’s with his brother and two cousins. All future big leaguers, at least they hope so.

The self-proclaimed “best grandma ever” says getting her boys out to PitCCh-In Foundation ProCamp at Luke Easter Park makes for a good day.

“If that’s what they want to do, it’s better than telephones and tablets. I want them to be productive and baseball, that’s fine with me,” Antoinette Butler said.

This camp is all about being productive and learning the game under the direction of skilled area coaches and one of the best pitchers in Cleveland baseball — former Indians star CC Sabathia, along with Kaulig Giving helping sponsor it.

The six-time All Star says he remembers the impact such camps had on him.

“As a nine-year-old, I got a chance to meet Dave Stewart and it changed by life. Not only did I want to be a baseball player, but I wanted to be a philanthropist, I wanted to have the same impact on me walking into my Boys and Girls Club that hopefully I can have on some of these kids,” Sabathia said.

Bringing this camp to where else but CC Sabathia field makes a great back drop to develop talents and build community.

Matt Kaulig says that’s something that’s very important to the Guardians, building a community of players from all over the area.

“Looking around here, these kids are having a blast. What CC’s done with his foundation and what he’s continuing to do to mentor these kids in Cleveland. We’re in Northeast Ohio. You live in Jersey now and they travel to Cleveland to make an impact on our community,” Kaulig said.

It’s safe to say that most of these children will not make it to the big leagues, but they will learn team work and how to have fun playing a game that they love.

Being outside and having a good time on sunny day is a homerun in any park.

Sabathia is also in town to be inducted into the Cleveland Baseball Hall of Honor.
