How to Create an ESXi Datastore with an Internal Disk

[ad_1]

Read this guide to learn how to create a datastore in an ESXi host using a free physical disk available on the host.

Step 1: Confirm a Free Disk is Available

Creating a datastore requires a free disk disk. Use these steps to check that there is a free disk (not used for an existing datastore).

  1. Sign in to the ESXi host via a browser and click the Storage node. The Datastores tab is selected by default.

  1. Note the datastores in the ESXi host, their drive types, capacity, and free space. Click on the existing datastores and note their Extent numbers.

In my screenshot below, the extent number of the existing datastore is Extent 0.

  1. Finally, click the Storage menu again, then select the Devices tab.

Compare the size and type of disks with the information you recorded in step 2. Mine shows that the 931 GB drive is not used for any datastores yet.

Step 2: Create a Datastore with the Free Disk

  1. From the Storage > Devices tab, click on the available drive. Then, click the Actions menu and select “Clear partition table.”

However, to use a portion of the disk to create a datastore, select the Custom. Then, left-click the free space on the left and enter a value for the size (in MB) of the disk you want to you.

You may also use the slider to determine the disk size to use in creating the datastore. In my example, I’m creating a datastore

Conclusion

To create a datastore in ESXi, you need a free disk (a disk not used in an existing datastore). So, the logical first step is to confirm that there is a free disk available to the ESXi host.

After that, use the disk to create a datastore.

In this guide, I explained the steps to complete these two steps and I hope you found it helpful. Let me your thoughts by responding to the “Was this page helpful?” feedback below.
