CLEVELAND (WJW) — The city of Cleveland has opened 17 public pools this weekend, but along with the ability to cool off, visitors can also expect schedule changes and armed security.

Regarding the security plans, City of Cleveland’s Division of Recreation had this to say in a press release: “For the safety of both residents and staff, facilities will have armed security from opening to closing each day of operations.”

The city also told Fox 8 the schedule changes — which include new 45-minute sessions, after which people will have to get out, exit the facility, and line up to reenter — came about due to an ongoing lifeguard shortage (as seen throughout the country) and the city wanting as many people as possible to get a chance to swim.

Pools are open from noon to 7:45 p.m., but will close daily from 4 to 5 for maintenance and lifeguard breaks. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Many deep ends of the pool are expected to be closed, based on staffing shortages, the city said.

Pools are scheduled to close for the season come Aug. 18. See the full list of indoor and outdoor pools that are open throughout the city right here.

Those interested in lifeguarding for the city (at $15 an hour) can call 216-664-3987 for more information.
