Varty Camp is synonymous with Londolozi’s beginnings, where tradition, laughter, and storytelling all come together to create a magical experience. As the original camp, Varty Camp stands as a testament to the owners’ nearly century-long connection with this sacred land, celebrating a legacy deeply rooted in family and heritage.
The rich history surrounding this camp makes it much more than just a place to stay. For this reason, in this blog, I want to explore five unique aspects of Varty Camp that you may not be aware of.
1. Architectural Innovation
When Varty Camp was built in 1976, it defied traditional bushveld camp aesthetics with its high thatch-roofed buildings and outstretching decks nestled among ancient riverine trees. This pioneering design set the blueprint for safari lodges in the following decades which shaped the identity of the evolving photographic safari industry.
With each refurbishment at Varty Camp over the years, our focus has been on preserving the simple elegance of the main deck and chalets. These spaces are envisioned as havens for stillness, which allows for a connection to the surrounding wilderness. The design not only prioritizes elegance but also ensures that every aspect seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings.
2. You can Visit the Original “Rondavels” – The First Rooms of Londolozi
Take a step back in time as you visit the original “rondavels,” the first rooms of Londolozi. Located in the heart of Varty Camp, these quaint structures hold the memories of the camp’s earliest days, offering a glimpse into the humble beginnings that laid the foundation for the extraordinary legacy of Varty Camp.

A rondavel is a round hut with a pointed roof, typically constructed from thatch. These structures served as guest accommodations at the Original Sparta Hunting Camp nearly 100 years ago.
3. The Significance of the Jackalberry Tree Located on Varty Camp Deck:
The Jackalberry tree holds great significance for us at Londolozi. Beneath its shade on the banks of the Sand River lay the beginnings of what has now become Londolozi as we know it today. In 1926, Frank Unger and Charles Boyd Varty stepped off a train, and their footsteps led them to this very Jackalberry tree, which still stands today at Varty Camp. As guests stand beneath its branches on the Varty Camp deck, whether awaiting a game drive or enjoying a meal, they become part of this enduring legacy.

4. Many Guest Activities Can be Found within the Surroundings of Varty Camp

5. Nelson Mandela’s Wisdom by the Fire
In 1991, Londolozi welcomed Nelson Mandela during a time when he sought solace and reflection. Seated around the Varty Camp fire during this historic visit, Mandela shared profound insights, emphasizing the oneness of humanity and the essence of Ubuntu. His presence not only enriched Varty Camp but also left an indelible mark, which signified a momentous chapter in the camp’s history as it became a beacon for wisdom, unity, and shared humanity.

Whenever a fire is lit in the Varty Camp boma, we remember Mandela’s legacy and the wise words he shared around this fire.

Varty Camp will always hold a special place as one of my favourite camps, as it stands as a living testament to the rich history, tradition, and harmony with nature that defines Londolozi.
