In it for the long haul? 90 Day Fiancé couple Kalani Faagata and Asuelu Pulaa have faced obstacles from the very beginning of their relationship — and they faced even more hardship when they returned to TLC for seasons 5 and 6 of the spinoff 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Not only were they adjusting to life as husband and wife and parents of two children under 2 but they were also facing financial issues. All of that tension led to constant fights between the couple, which played out on camera.
Kalani and Asuelu first met when she was on vacation in Samoa. Asuelu was working as the activities director at the resort she stayed in. “He kind of semi-stalked me around the resort, but it was really sweet. He’d like, watch after me when I was swimming in the pool or if I was walking around. And one of the nights, I saw him shirtless and I was like, ‘OK, this could work,’” she gushed.
Before she met Asuelu, Kalani was a virgin. “In the Mormon faith, you’re taught you don’t have sex before you’re married, but after my second visit to Samoa to see Asuelu, I felt like I found someone I loved and I wanted to experience it with him,” she explained. “So, we did the deed.”
Even though Kalani was in love, her family did not support her relationship with Asuelu. “They just thought that maybe he just did this with all of the American tourist girls. They thought he was just taking advantage of me,” she said. “And then I had to tell them, ‘Hey, I’m not a virgin anymore and I had sex and by the way, I’m having a baby.”
Kalani said her dad “flipped the f—k out” over her pregnancy and her sister felt Asuelu impregnated Kalani on purpose so he could move to America.
Asuelu was not able to be present during their son Oliver’s birth, so Kalani flew to Samoa with him when he was 2 months old to meet his dad in person for the first time. The couple discussed where they wanted to raise their son and Asuelu’s first choice was America because there are “more opportunities.” They agreed it was the best option for their family, so they filed an application for Asuelu’s K-1 visa — and the rest is history.
