Your dating life needs VAR

Your dating life needs VAR

Yes, this is about dating.  Stay with me…..

Every four years, the world loses its mind over the World Cup.

I know about as much about soccer as I know about rebuilding a transmission.

Disclosure and Explanation: But watching the World Cup last night USA vs Paraguay? Wow.

The energy was contagious.

The patriotism was off the charts.

After five minutes, even I was yelling at the television like I’d been following soccer my entire life.  We won. 4-1.

And let’s talk about those players.

Those legs have done more work this month than most people’s New Year’s resolutions all year.

If you don’t know who Lionel Messi is, he’s only one of the greatest soccer players to ever lace up a pair of cleats. Think of him as the Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, and Tiger Woods of soccer rolled into one remarkably compact human.

These days he plays for Inter Miami CF, which means one of the biggest stars on the planet calls America home. (BTW, he’s playing for his home country, Argentina in the WC

And whether you’re a die-hard soccer fan or someone who still calls it “that game where nobody uses their hands,” there’s something pretty inspiring about watching the entire world come together for a few weeks of competition, passion, and pure joy.

Plus, let’s be honest: if dating had the same level of enthusiasm as a World Cup crowd, my job would be a whole lot easier.

Millions of people watch the greatest players on earth do things the rest of us couldn’t do in our dreams.

And somehow, dating has become exactly the same.

Not literally.

Problem? There’s only one Messi.

But the dating version of Messi.

✔ Emotionally available

✔ Doesn’t have baggage

✔ Doesn’t live too far away

✔ Doesn’t have weird texting habits

✔ Ages exactly the way you hoped

The best soccer teams in the world don’t win because they have one superstar.

They win because they have teammates who work together.

People who pass the ball.

People who don’t disappear at halftime.

After 33,000 first dates as a dating coach, dating strategist and matchmaker,  I can tell you this:

The people who find great relationships aren’t looking for perfection.

They’re looking for partnership.

They understand something most singles don’t:

You aren’t building an Instagram highlight reel.

You’re building a Tuesday night.

Someone to laugh with when your flight gets canceled and your hotel loses the reservation.

And here’s the really uncomfortable part:

While you’re busy looking for a global superstar, someone wonderful may be sitting right in front of you getting eliminated in the group stage because they’re only an 8.7 instead of a mythical 10.

Maybe stop scouting for highlights.

Start scouting for character.

Because in dating, just like the World Cup, the trophy usually goes to the team that works best together—not the one with the flashiest player.

So, VAR? It’s a video replay in soccer. For you, it’s because your friends saw the red flags 3 dates ago. Stop collecting red flags like they’re World Cup Souvenirs. It’s time to date smarter. Click here.

Love isn’t luck. It’s strategy.

And sometimes the winning move is stopping the search for Messi and giving a great teammate a second look.

Founder, 33,000 Dates, 10,000+ marriages and long-term relationships later… I’m still rooting for the underdogs.
