After the crash, the driver got out while holding a child, who had been in the car with them.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A man is facing charges after he crashed while driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 270 near Clarksburg, bringing traffic to a halt on Friday evening.
Maryland State Police say the incident began to unfold when a driver was reportedly traveling on the southbound shoulder of the northbound lanes of Route 15 near Liberty Road in Frederick.
When a state trooper located the vehicle, he began pursuing, but the car went south on I-270 northbound. The trooper broke off at Urbana Pike.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office then began chasing the driver and stopped him just north of Clarksburg Road.
According to Montgomery County Department of Police spokesperson Shiera Goff, the driver was going the wrong direction on I-270 when they collided with another car.
After the crash, the driver got out while holding a child, who had been in the car with them.
Police contacted negotiators to try to resolve the situation and later tased the suspect while he held the child.
The suspect may have been injured in the crash, and the child is reportedly “okay.”
Very little is known about the child at this time. Police could not confirm their age or how they are related to the driver who crashed while going the wrong way on the interstate.
Law enforcement has cleared 1-270 in both directions, with activity largely relegated to the shoulders of the road.
