Witness descriptions, body camera video led Edgecombe deputies to football game shooting suspect

Edgecombe County deputies used body camera video, witness statements and phone call tracking to identify the teen they say fired a shot at a high school football game, injuring two.

Warrants show how deputies found Jamarion Rontrell Hinton, tracked him to a home in Raleigh and made the arrest.

Hinton, 17, was being held in juvenile custody in Wake County Friday, while in Edgecombe County authorities stepped up security for future football games. Hinton was arrested on Tuesday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharge of a weapon on school property and possession of a handgun by a minor.

Two teens — a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy — were injured during the Sept. 12 game at SouthWest Edgecombe High School. The boy was shot. The girl was treated for an apparent graze from a bullet.

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson has said that someone fired a gun near the concession stand. A search warrant in the case against Hinton says that deputies at the game noticed a crowd forming near the concession stand during halftime. As the second half of the game commenced, around 8:35 p.m., deputies heard a single shot.

Witnesses told deputies that two people were arguing in the concession line.

According to the warrant, they described the shooter as male with dark skin, with shoulder-length dread locks and braces, wearing a black hoodie with white writing on the chest and sleeves.

When deputies reviewed their body camera video, the warrant says, they were able to see that the person in the black hoodie left behind a shoe near the scene of the shooting, then returned to retrieve it. They also noticed that he had “a distinctive gait, with his right arm held rigid against his body while his left hand appeared to support it, consistent with possible concealment of a weapon,” deputies wrote in the warrant.

Their investigation led them to a home on Walston Street, where they met a 17-year-old who matched the suspect description. They did not arrest him at the time, but the teen’s mother provided his mobile phone number, and deputies were able to track it.

On Tuesday, the tracked the phone to a home on Bart Street in Raleigh, where a car belonging to Tramella Hinton was parked outside.

“Hinton has children who are known affiliates of our target Jamarion Hinton,” deputies wrote in a request to search the house and car. “Jamarion was seen with her children at the football game on September 12, 2025, when the shooting occurred.”

They got a search warrant for that home and seized a gun and two iPhones. They also arrested Jamarion Hinton there.
