Britney Spears may have lashed out at her friend Selena Gomez in a cryptic Instagram post over an awards speech she gave in 2016.

The “Toxic” singer posted a lengthy caption alongside two photos of her in a red bikini and seemingly took issue with a speech Gomez gave at the American Music Awards that year.

Gomez had just won the award for Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist and used her acceptance speech to send a message to fans about body image.

Spears seemingly slammed Gomez’s speech in a recent post as unsupportive of women.

“I don’t wanna see your bodies on Instagram. I wanna see what’s in here,” Gomez said at the time, while pointing to her heart. “I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore.”

Six years later, Spears, who has become known for dancing in small outfits and posing nude on Instagram, dug up the speech and took aim at Gomez.

“Don’t you just love the nerve of women who stand firmly getting awards and speak on their beliefs about not showing their bodies on instagram ???!!!!!” Spears began in the since edited post.

“They say ‘This is NOT something I would do’ yet those women are the very ones who get 4 million dollar budget videos made about sucking and licking on homemade ice cream!!!!”

The reference to ice cream could be a dig at Gomez’s music video with K-pop group Blackpink for the song “Ice Cream.”

In the 2020 video, Gomez and the Blackpink stars—Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa— work in an ice cream truck and later eat ice cream from cones.

Spears continued: “These other girls have nothing but beautiful bodies !!!! Who cares if the flaunt it ??? THEY SHOULD !!!

“So the next time I see someone with a big budget video sucking on lollipops yet giving righteous speeches shaming other women for exposing their bodies, I would like to tell those people don’t be a hypocrite as you suck on your lollipop having HUGE budget dreams…”

She concluded: “Why would you stand firmly against girls getting attention JUST LIKE YOU and they have absolutely nothing ????”

But Spears later deleted the caption and replaced it with her signature red roses emoji.

Spears’ supposed shade towards Gomez comes as a surprise after the pop star attended the “Lucky” hitmaker’s nuptials to Sam Asghari in June.

Gomez joined the likes of Paris Hilton, Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Donatella Versace at the star-studded wedding.

Spears married the model at her former Thousand Oaks, California, home after dating him for around five years.

The singer herself was surprised at the celebrity turnout for her big day.

“Guys just two months ago I got married [party popper emojis] !!! Can you believe it [see-no-evil monkey emojis] ??? Going to Disneyland soon, my happy place,” Spears wrote on Instagram in August alongside a photo of the stars at her wedding reception.

She then tagged each of the famous women and said, “thanks for surprising me.”

But she also gave Gomez a special shoutout, making her recent Instagram rant even more confounding.

“Thank you to Selena for telling me all she wants is for me to be happy 3 times !!! It was a very, very, very special wedding !!!” Spears wrote in August.

In an earlier post soon after the wedding, Spears also gushed about Gomez saying her mother also likes to wish people happiness “three times.”

“It was so cool she was able to get to me and share her thoughts … Although I’ve been forced to see people against my will my whole life … she was a beautiful surprise !!!” wrote Spears.

“I appreciate ALL the mental health speeches she does for our generation … Two-hour specials with representatives … You’re such a special person and I had to share this picture … I thought it would make her happy.”

Gomez herself spoke about the wedding on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, saying: “I am really happy for her. It was beautiful.”

Newsweek has reached out to Britney Spears and Selena Gomez for comment.
