The most common causes of a “weak ejaculation” is simply aging… but it can sometimes be a sign of a health problem. A weak ejaculation may mean a lower volume of ejaculate (semen), or it may mean a less forceful ejaculation.

When you ejaculate, semen is expelled from your body through the penis in two stages:

  1. Emission: Semen, which contains sperm, gathers in the urethral bulb located at the base of the penis.
  2. Expulsion: Muscles surrounding the urethra contract, forcing the semen out through the penis.

Problems with either stage can be an issue for men who are trying to have children.

Low Volume (Hypospermia)

The average volume when a man ejaculates is 1/3 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon. If a man consistently produces a lower volume, he is suffering from a condition called hypospermia, or Perceived Ejaculate Volume Reduction (PEVR). The most common causes of low ejaculatory volume are:

  • radiation of the prostate gland for cancer treatments
  • medications used to treat an enlarged prostate gland, high blood pressure, and depression
  • diabetes
  • low testosterone
  • frequent ejaculations
  • smoking

PEVR is often linked to erectile dysfunction and other sexual issues.

Weak Orgasms

There is no standard way of measuring ejaculatory force; problems are often subjectively noted by the man or his partner. Weaker orgasms may not feel as satisfying as stronger ones.

Weak orgasms may be caused by:

  • weakened pelvic floor muscles
  • low testosterone or other hormone deficiencies
  • retrograde ejaculation, a physical problem in which semen is diverted from the urethra into the bladder
  • surgery or drugs used to treat enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, or testicular cancer
  • nerve damage caused by diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple sclerosis

Treatments for Weak Ejaculations or Low Semen Volume

Ejaculatory problems may be addressed by determining and treating the underlying condition. There are also drug therapies that may be prescribed by a urologist.

Over-the-counter supplements and herbal remedies claim to increase semen volume and result in stronger ejaculations. There is no evidence to support these claims.
