DENVER (KDVR) — A dense fog advisory was in effect for much of the Denver metro area, starting along the Front Range and extending to the Eastern Plains Thursday morning.
The fog limited visibility on Interstate 25 and Interstate 76.
A time-lapse video included above shows the fog rolling in as seen from Lookout Mountain in Golden.
Pinpoint Weather meteorologist Travis Michels explained that the fog was essentially trapped near the ground due to warmer, drier air above it.
The view from Lookout Mountain sits at 7,377 feet, making for a perfect view above the rolling fog.
Data showed that there was 100% humidity at 6,600 feet, and at 6,700 feet, humidity was at 32%. That’s why, Michels explains, the sky was clear above the rolling fog.
“That is the whole reason why there is nothing above and everything below, because of how dry it is and how much saturation there is right there,” he said.
The clear birdseye view of the rolling fog is something he often sees in the Pacific Northwest, but this was the first time he had seen it happen in Denver.
FOX31’s Courtney Fromm reported from roads across the metro area, seeing dense fog that made it difficult to see the rental car buildings from Pena Boulevard near the Denver International Airport.
Fromm saw fog that was patchy and worse in some areas than others.
The fog is expected to clear Thursday afternoon, making for a brisk and sunny rest of the day.
Later this weekend, the FOX31 Pinpoint Weather team is expecting snow across much of the state, but mostly in the mountains.
