The blossoming relationship between a senior golden retriever called Cali and a new puppy Tommy has delighted users on TikTok in a video viewed more than 825,000 times.
In the footage, posted by Boston-based Christina, Cali can be seen moving away while the puppy tries to snuggle up to her. The text reads “Over it already,” but then changes to “realizing she has a play buddy,” as the dogs run in the garden.

There are many examples on the internet of senior dogs benefitting from a younger companion. However, there are factors to consider when introducing a puppy into the mix.
Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer of the American Kennel Club (AKC), suggests on its website: “As with introducing kids and dogs, the temperament of your senior dog should be considered when evaluating which puppy will make a good addition to your home.”
Klein says that older dogs can be creatures of habit and enjoy routine and consistency that can be disrupted by a new arrival, and “any disruption could cause anxiety or possibly result in jealousy or envy.” His advice includes:
- Focus your attention on your older dog before greeting your younger dog
- Feed your older dog first
- Put the leash on your older dog first
The AKC also recommends considering keeping your puppy in a crate when you are not around to ensure they don’t get into any mischief, as well as making sure they don’t disturb your senior dog. This can also be a good way for the older pet to get used to the smell and presence of the new puppy.
“Make sure your senior dog is given time separate from the new puppy and vice versa,” the AKC reports. “Constant contact can be a recipe for conflict, and one way to head that off is to give each dog some alone time to relax. Both dogs need individual time and attention for themselves, away from each other.”
The video shows Cali and Tommy napping together and then covered in mud as the text explains the older dog is “even teaching him how to get in trouble.”
At one point in the clip, the text reads, “he never leaves her side after surgery,” and then, “I guess he can stay.” The caption reads, “highly recommend getting your dog, a dog.”
One TikToker commented: “My Senior boy lost his sister – he was so sad – the vet recommended a friend. They are INSEPARABLE.”
User lc2257 wrote: “This made me bawl my 16 year old dog had to be put to rest a few weeks ago. My 3 yo golden doodle has not been the same.”
“I love how they learned to love each other. people could learn a thing or 2 by watching this video,” TikTok user Mavericktopdog commented.
