Yesterday in Phoenix, GQ Sports opened the doors to the GQ Sports Style Hall of Fame—our brand-new way to celebrate the coolest athletes of all time. To mark the occasion, we threw an event featuring our three inductees—Derek Jeter, Allen Iverson, and Deion Sanders—with each star in the building to talk about their legendary careers. Iverson took to the stage amid a swell of applause and camera flashes before sitting down for a conversation with GQ’s senior special projects editor Mark Anthony Green.

Iverson spoke at length about how he went from being a young basketball player who idolized Michael Jordan to becoming Allen Iverson—first an NBA rookie hitting his idol MJ with his soon-to-be-famous crossover, and eventually one of the greatest players in league history. He shared his style philosophy (“Be you—everyone else is taken up!”), and explained why it always felt important to feel good about his on-court look (“Superman wouldn’t wear Batman’s shoes!”). Iverson also explained that, back in his extra-baggy era, he frustrated his big-guy teammates by buying out the stock at his local big-and-tall store. As he put it while talking about the NBA’s AI-influenced clothing guidelines, “They started a dress code, but obviously it’s bullshit because I’m in the GQ Hall of Fame!”
