A record 40% of the world’s oceans are experiencing marine heat waves, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This temperature shift is especially notable in the Gulf states and threatens the health of their oceanic ecosystems. It could also lead to an increase in hurricane activity and intensity and puts the Gulf Stream in danger of collapsing. What’s causing these marine heat waves and how worried should we be?
