This rare special election has become a flashpoint over federal layoffs, education policy and public safety
VIRGINIA, USA — On Tuesday, voters in most of Fairfax County and all of the City of Fairfax will be choosing a successor to the late Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly, who died in May from cancer.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The two candidates for the 11th District congressional race are Democrat James Walkinshaw and Republican Stewart Whitson. Here is some background information on both candidates:
James Walkinshaw (Democrat)
He is served as Chief of Staff for Rep. Gerry Connolly for a little over ten years (2009-2019), and is currently serving his second term on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for the Braddock District.

Stewart Whitson (Republican)
He is a former FBI special agent and U.S. Army veteran. He is a lawyer and he is currently a Senior Director for the Foundation for Government Accountability, which is a conservative think tank.

According to the Associated Press, as of Sept. 1 there were nearly 568,000 registered voters in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. As of Sept. 3, more than 48,000 ballots had been cast. That includes about 52% by mail and the rest during in-person early voting.
