Virginia taxpayers eligible for rebates up to $400; rebates to be paid this fall

Virginia taxpayers can check their eligibility for a fall tax rebate of up to $400.

NORFOLK, Va. — Beginning this week, Virginia taxpayers can check to see whether they are eligible for a tax rebate of up to $400 that is being paid this fall.

Eligible Virginia taxpayers will receive tax rebates of up to $400 for joint filers, or up to $200 for individual filers. Taxpayers who incurred tax liability in 2024 and filed or will file their returns prior to Nov. 3, 2025, may be eligible for the rebate.

Those who filed their state taxes prior to July 1 will be sent rebates by Oct. 15, according to the office of Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

Taxpayers who received a state tax refund by direct deposit this year should expect to receive their rebate by direct deposit in the same bank account. All others will receive a paper check in the mail.

Taxpayers who owe money to a state or local agency may see that money garnished to satisfy the debt, however.

The rebates were approved by the General Assembly earlier this year. Youngkin said the rebates are a result of strong job growth and business investment that has resulted in $10 billion in surplus revenue.

“This fall’s tax rebate reflects a simple truth: it’s your money, not the government’s,” Youngkin stated in a press release. “We have made record investments supporting teachers and students, law enforcement, and Virginians facing behavioral health crises, while also lowering costs for individuals, families, veterans and small businesses.”

Starting Thursday, taxpayers can visit tax.virginia.gov/rebate to check their eligibility.
