US presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis has been involved in a car crash.

The Florida governor, who is running for the 2024 Republican nomination, was involved in an accident in Tennessee but is uninjured, his campaign press secretary said.

“This morning, the governor was in a car accident while travelling to an event in Chattanooga, Tennessee,” said Bryan Griffin.

“He and his team are uninjured.”

Police told local TV it happened when traffic slowed down and caused four cars in the motorcade to hit each other. They said one staff member had sustained a minor injury.

The governor’s representatives did not comment on the specifics, but said he was continuing to his scheduled event.

Mr DeSantis had been due to appear in central and eastern Tennessee on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old is considered former president Donald Trump’s main challenger in the Republican contest.

Mr DeSantis has been trailing Mr Trump, with 51% of people in a poll last month saying the ex-president was their first choice and only 22% choosing his younger rival.

However, Mr DeSantis is seen as the only candidate with a realistic chance of defeating Mr Trump.

As Florida governor he has fashioned himself as an anti-‘woke’ warrior, appealing to many of the same people who support his rival.

The decision on who will take on Joe Biden in November 2024 will be made next summer.
