A pilot and co-pilot died after their plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean near the California coast, officials said Sunday.

The duo was aboard a Viking Air DHC-6-400 Twin Otter traveling from Northern California to Hawaii when it went down shortly after 2 p.m. local time Saturday, the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed to the Daily News.

“The U.S. Coast Guard located the plane submerged about 40 nautical miles southwest of San Francisco,” the NTSB said in a statement.

No one else was aboard the plane, which authorities are still working to recover, according to the NTSB. The pilots declared a mayday before the crash, the federal agency said.

Officials have not said what caused the crash, nor have they identified either of the people who died.

The confirmation follows the NTSB’s announcement on Saturday that it was investigating a crash near Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles south of San Francisco.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is also investigating the incident and specified the plane had been flying from Santa Rosa, Calif., to Honolulu. The nature of the flight was not released.

“The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates,” the FAA said in a statement.

In a description on its website, Viking Air describes its Twin Otter plane as “the best-selling 19-passenger aircraft of all time.”
