NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of runners will gather in Northampton Sunday morning for a fundraiser benefiting children in foster care.

The Treehouse Foundation expects 300 runners and walkers on the airport tarmac on Sunday. This is the foundation’s second annual event supporting children and families in the area who are impacted by foster care.

Organizers say the goal is to surround children with loving families and break the cycle of poverty and other problems that have been associated with foster care. The majority of Treehouse children remain with their adoptive families until they reach adulthood. It is estimated that 95 percent of these children never return to the foster care system. They graduate from high school and go on to college or vocational training. The positive outcomes in foster care are in sharp contrast with the national data.

To maintain these positive results, the nonprofit is raising money to help these children through the race. During its debut, Runway 5K raised more than $80,000. The team’s goal for this year is $110,000. Registration is $30 and is open to those who want to run a competitive, timed race as well as those who seek to have a more casual run or walk. Participants who raise $150 will earn their wings and a popular Runway 5K beanie. Prizes go to the individuals and teams who raise the most in donations, the first to cross the finish line in age categories, and the most enthusiastic walkers.

This race will happen rain or shine and check-in opens at 8:00 a.m. at the Northampton Airport.
