DENVER (KDVR) — The number of speeding citations given to drivers in school and construction zones increased by 12% in 2023, according to Colorado State Patrol.

In 2023, 1,237 people were cited for speeding in these low-speed zones, while that number was 1,102 in 2022.

These zones, CSP explained, are designed to have lower speed limits, traffic calming devices and high-visibility warning devices for a good reason.

“Motorists should never assume people will not be present in these low-speed zones and follow the law because people’s lives literally depend on you,” CSP Col. Matthew C. Packard said.

These five counties logged the most citations for speeding in low-speed zones:

  1. El Paso County: 222 citations
  2. Larimer County: 131 citations
  3. Adams County: 127 citations
  4. Mesa County: 111 citations
  5. Garfield County: 88 citations

CSP said 48 of Colorado’s 64 counties had at least one driver receive a citation for speeding in school or construction zones.
