When Date Night Starts Feeling Too Predictable
Not long ago, my husband and I were having an honest conversation about date night.
We’ve always prioritized dating each other throughout our marriage. In fact, it’s one of the reasons we’ve stayed so connected through nearly 20 years together.
But somewhere along the way, life got busier.
Between work, kids, church responsibilities, and everything else competing for our attention, our date nights had become a little… predictable.
Dinner dates.
Movie dates.
Netflix-and-chill-on-the-couch dates.
And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with those kinds of dates, we realized we were missing something.
We missed the excitement.
The anticipation.
The creativity.
The feeling of trying something new together.
So we made a pact: we’d take turns surprising each other with creative date nights.
That’s when I decided to plan a date my husband never saw coming.
A Segway tour.
Finding a New “First” After Almost 20 Years of Marriage
One of the challenges of being married for a long time is that you’ve already experienced so many firsts together.
After nearly two decades of marriage, finding something completely new can feel surprisingly difficult.
That’s why I loved this date idea so much.
Neither of us had ever ridden a Segway before.
And honestly? It sounded just quirky enough to be memorable.
I booked a Segway tour in downtown Scottsdale, Arizona and kept the entire thing a surprise.
The Mystery Road Trip
The day of the date, I only gave my husband two pieces of information:
- What time to be ready.
- What to wear.
That’s it.
As we drove to Scottsdale, I plugged the address into our GPS without telling him where we were headed.
The drive itself ended up being part of the fun.
We rolled down the windows, blasted some music, sang along to our favorite songs, and enjoyed the anticipation of not knowing what was coming next.
When we finally pulled into the parking lot and he realized we were about to ride Segways, his face was priceless.
Apparently, this was something he’d always wanted to try.
Score one for surprise date night.

Confession: I Thought I Was Going to Fall Off
I’ll be honest.
I was nervous.
I’m not exactly known for my athletic ability, and balance has never been my strong suit.
I fully expected to spend the afternoon wobbling around like a baby giraffe.
Thankfully, the tour company was fantastic.
Before anyone left the parking lot, every rider received hands-on training.
We practiced:
- Starting and stopping
- Turning
- Going up ramps
- Going down ramps
- Navigating curbs safely
Nobody moved on until everyone felt comfortable.
The best part?
Almost everyone figured it out within about 10 minutes.
(When my 70-year-old friend from church told me about her Segway tour, I decided I could probably survive it too.)
Turns out, I absolutely loved it.

Why a Segway Tour Is Such a Great Date Idea
The tour itself was the perfect mix of adventure, sightseeing, conversation, and fun.
We wore headsets while riding, so our guide could share stories about Scottsdale’s history, landmarks, architecture, and local attractions.
It felt a little like exploring a new city and a little like being on a mini adventure together.
Our tour included:
- Guided sightseeing
- Historic landmarks
- Fun photo opportunities
- A lunch break to explore
- Plenty of time to talk and laugh together
And then came my favorite part…
At the end of the tour, we had extra time on our Segways, so the guides took us to an empty parking garage where we got to ride up and down the ramps and loop-de-loops!
It was SO MUCH FUN! We felt like kids again.
By the end of the date, I was already trying to figure out when we could do it again.

- “Want to Segway into love with me this weekend?”
- “I’ve got a wheel-y fun surprise planned for us.”
- “Let’s roll into date night together.”

The Best Part Wasn’t the Segway
Looking back, the Segways were only part of what made this date so memorable.
The surprise.
The anticipation.
The laughter.
The shared experience.
The chance to do something completely new together.
Those are the things that really matter.
After almost 20 years of marriage, this date reminded us that there are still plenty of firsts waiting to be discovered.
And sometimes all it takes is stepping off the couch and saying yes to a little adventure.
So if your date nights have started feeling a bit repetitive, consider this your sign.
Hop on a Segway and see where it takes you!
Most people learn within 10–15 minutes during the training session.
Prices vary by location, but many tours offer discounts through Groupon or seasonal promotions. Plan to tip your guide.
Absolutely. They combine adventure, conversation, sightseeing, and shared experiences in one memorable date.
Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are typically recommended. Definitely check the weather before you leave.
