A TEENAGE schoolboy and a 28-year-old man were charged in a district court in Lae with having 20kg of marijuana yesterday.
Magistrate James Morog told student Junior Apelis, from Kokopo’s Bitabaur village, and Cyril Isimel from Rabaul’s Nodup village, both in East New Britain (ENB), that the quantity of dangerous drug they possessed was huge.
The court also found that the address written on one of the nine boxes containing the drug was to a person in a primary school in ENB.
Morog asked Isimel whether he knew what they were handling, and he said “we know and wanted to get it out of their way as soon as possible”.
“We do not own the boxes.
“A woman who organised for these drugs to be shipped to ENB actually went to the post office and tried to send the boxes but she was rejected at the counter. She came out, left the boxes with us and went away,” Isimel said.
Police alleged that Isimel and Apelis were in the Lae Post Office compound at about 1pm on March 27 when policemen in a patrol car stopped to conduct a search.
They seized the drug. Magistrate Morog fixed March 31 for the next hearing.
The exhibits presented in court showed nine fresh and tightly packed packets of dried marijuana and a carton containing the same drug packed with clothes.
