    I’ve been wearing Madewell jeans for as long as I can remember, and there are several reasons why. First of all, the brand is always quick to join in on the latest denim trends (without ever ignoring the classics). Additionally, its jeans are well-made but inexpensive compared to other denim brands of comparable quality. And lastly, they’re comfortable and true-to-size (and they come in tons of sizes and even different length options).

    For the first time in a long time, I’m in desperate need of a few new pairs of jeans, and I’ve had my eye on several Madewell ones as of late. Accordingly, I got the chance to try on a whole stack of jeans in the comfort of my own home and I’m here to share the fruits of my labor with you.

    Choosing the right pair of jeans for you is a pretty personal thing, but I did my best to give my honest feedback in the most helpful way possible. And I took photos of my try-on adventure, of course. I don’t know about you but I’m someone who is always searching for photos of exact styles of jeans in Google Image.

    The word “gatekeep” in the context of fashion exists for a reason. In an environment where an item that feels unique and different from every other ubiquitous viral sensation can easily meet that same fate following one successful TikTok video, we can’t exactly blame fashion people for keeping some of their secret go-to brands under lock and key. After all, we’ve seen how hard the social media platform has made getting reservations at new, hot restaurants. It’s no different with clothes.

    Thus far, the fashion crowd’s been fairly successful at keeping their mouths shut about and their closets full of Raey, the in-house label that London-based luxury e-tailer Matches launched in 2015. Known for its baby-soft knits, cool oversize denim, and perfectly tailored outerwear, the brand’s become a beloved staple for elevated basics, much like The Frankie Shop, Loulou Studio, and Toteme. Unlike those much-discussed labels, Raey flies under the radar for the most part, but I’m bursting its bubble. After trying on 10 pieces by the brand, I can’t seem to keep my mouth shut about how good it is.

    The fashion world is currently enamored with watches, especially ones designed for and worn by women. Instagram is loaded with them, showcased on wrists and stacked alongside sculptural bracelets or in a decorative box to show off a growing collection. In a retail space once dominated by men, women are embracing these meticulously crafted and categorically luxurious investment items with open arms.

    In the past, celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez dabbled in larger timepieces, but this time around, most of the watches that are trending among women are rather dainty in size. Think smaller Tanks and Baignoires and Lady Datejusts.  While I am nothing if not smitten with all three of the aforementioned styles, I’m also someone who spent her early 20s in a men’s Seiko stolen from her father, which is why I’ve always had a soft spot for bigger, more substantial timepieces when time is taken to choose the right one and, of course, it is styled just right. 

    One trick to styling a men’s watch is to stick with cases that are 40 millimeters or below. Anything larger than that tends to be overly showy, a trait that’s best avoided, especially for an everyday watch. (Luxury watches are expensive and sought after, so you don’t want to draw an abundance of attention to yours. In 2022, nearly 7000 Rolexes were reported stolen or missing, according to data from The Watch Register.) I also prefer to go for classic color options and minimal designs that can be dressed up or down and will fit seamlessly with my existing jewelry collection and wardrobe.

    Tory Burch is at the top of her game, with collection after collection garnering rave reviews from the fashion community at large; an endless array of top influencers, from Emily Ratajkowski to Alix Earle, wearing her designs; and multiple viral items with her name on their labels. In other words, I’m not alone in my admiration for the New York–based designer, which is why her brand was the perfect choice for Let’s Get a Room’s first foray into the luxury space. I couldn’t help myself. After all, given how much time I spend in its multi-floor, home-like Mercer Street boutique for personal reasons (i.e., I can’t stop shopping the brand’s current spring/summer 2023 sale selection), a proper excuse became not just warranted but necessary.

    That’s how I ended up taking over two dressing rooms on the third floor of the TB townhouse late one Tuesday night, sipping prosecco and Pellegrino while putting together outfits from the currently-on-display F/W 23 offering as well as holiday-ready dresses, handbags, and shoes. Simply put, I entered into heaven, one where there’s no such thing as too many gold accessories, Tory Burch’s pierced-toe heels aren’t almost sold out, and my entire wardrobe bears her name.     Anthropologie has been a fan favorite of celebrities and fashion people for decades now. The retailer houses a collection of brands we all know and love—such as Reformation, Norma Kamali, and Ronny Kobo—and the pieces from its own in-house brand are fabulous in their own right. I can remember being a high school student begging my mom to take me into Anthro to walk the sales floor and look at all of the pretty pieces beautifully displayed, from unique home décor picks to bridal dresses to shoes and accessories galore. I was like a kid in a candy store, picking up incense and scented candles one minute and cashmere sweaters and bohemian printed dresses the next. 

    As I’ve grown older, my love for Anthropologie has only grown stronger. After cleaning out my closet for fall and winter, Anthro was the first stop when hunting for fresh new pieces to replenish the pieces I just kicked to the curb. To no surprise at all, there were so many pieces that I loved, but there were only a lucky few that I actually added to my cart. Once my Anthro order arrived, I was so excited about it that I had to do a little try-on haul—the pieces are that good.

    A great pair of shoes has the power to make an outfit memorable. Even just jeans and a T-shirt can look and feel special if they’re styled alongside an elegant pair of pumps or some sleek heeled boots.     It’s rare for a brand to be known for everything it makes. Oftentimes, they’ll be famous for a specific thing, from Levi’s and denim to Bottega Veneta and braided leather goods. For Reformation, the area that really got the brand to the top was its linen, whether it’s crafted into a dress, a set, or separates. Just take a look at the brand’s best-sellers page if you want proof. A majority of the items listed there are crafted out of the summertime-favorite fabric. But since I’ve never been one to blindly accept the word of the masses, I decided that it was time to finally put Reformation’s linen offering to the test and see if all that hype is justified. 

    To do so, I took home four of the brand’s most talked-about linen pieces—the Will Oversized Linen Shirt, the Mason Linen Shorts, the Tagliatelle Linen Dress, and the Robbie Linen Two-Piece Set—and tried them on, actually feeling the material, physically experimenting with the fit, and experiencing IRL the silhouettes.     When I really think about it, I’m 99% sure that Abercrombie was the first store I ever went in on my own. I’m 100% sure of the first piece I ever bought there, 1. because I wore it at least four times a week for years, and 2. because it was my first time ever buying a clothing item with my own money. They were dark-wash skinny jeans with zippered hems from the Kids store at my local, suburban-Chicago mall. I saved up for them for weeks.

    For the next half a decade or so, I was obsessed with Abercrombie, wearing it from head-to-toe every time I had a casual-dress day at my elementary school (we wore uniforms) and in pieces once I got to middle school and was allowed to dress as I pleased. By the time I entered high school, though, my interest in the brand’s signature aesthetic had waned as I started wanting to look older and more like the models I saw in fashion magazines and designer advertising campaigns. In turn, I stopped visiting its stores. In fact, I didn’t step foot in one for close to ten years. 

    Given my childhood infatuation, my excitement couldn’t be contained when I started noticing that Abercrombie was going in a different direction a few years back—a more timeless, elevated, and style-forward direction. It grew even more when I was invited to preview its new New York City flagship store, positioned on Fifth Avenue, adjacent to Ferragamo, Cartier, and the Museum of Modern Art. (Chic, I know.) Like a kid in a candy store, I immediately started grabbing pieces that unlike the ones I remembered from my tween days, looked utterly sophisticated and grown up.     My closet isn’t just full, it’s absolutely overflowing. In addition to everything hanging on racks, I have an entire shelving unit dedicated to my shoes and that’s not even counting the 15 or so excess shoe boxes that are currently being used as a bedside table. Yet out of all that, only about a handful of the shoes in my collection are actually comfortable, which doesn’t bode well for someone who lives in New York City, where walking is the primary form of transportation.

    No matter how good the photos are, detailed the descriptions are, or visually appealing the website interface is, shopping online will never ever compare to the simple act of trying something on. Why do you think the pandemic led to so many outlandish purchases? No one could try anything on first, and everyone was too exhausted to return anything. Unfortunately, depending on where you’re shopping from, you might not have the privilege of living in close proximity to every store you’re eyeing something from. That’s where I come in.

    Exhibit number one is Massimo Dutti, Zara’s elevated older-sister brand that specializes in clothing, shoes, and accessories for people who want their clothes to do the work for them by making them look chic without any effort. Think linen separates, satin slips, tweed outerwear, and flats and heels that look and feel like designer but rarely cost more than $200. This season’s offering is one of the Spanish retailer’s all-time best.

    Without a store in the U.S., though, you’ll have to either cross over into Montréal or Toronto in Canada or board a flight to Europe in order to test its pieces in real life.     I’ll admit, I’m new to the Madewell bandwagon. But after spotting a slew of pieces that I straight up couldn’t believe were from the affordable denim brand and not a designer ready-to-wear label, I figured it was about time I stop sleeping on its offerings and finally give the retailer a proper IRL test-drive. And since a brand-new location just opened on the Upper East Side in Manhattan and I myself am an uptown newcomer, I practically had no choice but to stop by and set up shop in the dressing room for a few hours. 

    To say that my expectations for the selection were exceeded wouldn’t even begin to describe the situation at hand. As an extremely picky fashion editor, getting pieces to impress me online is already rare. For them to win me over in person is a whole other, far more strenuous feat. And yet, from linen trousers to basic tanks, pretty much everything I brought with me into my dressing room at Madewell came home with me.

    Let’s play a little numbers game; how much more clothing do you think the average person owns now compared to 15 years ago? Five percent? Twenty-five? Sixty percent? Hate to break it to you, but it’s the latter. We’re not only buying more clothing than previous generations, but we’re wearing it less too. It’s a terrifying thought, especially considering fast fashion’s negative impacts on the world. From contributing the highest carbon emissions globally to causing micro-plastic pollution in the ocean, the effects are endless.

    I think about it often, especially as someone in the industry’s trenches who has to grapple with the knowledge of this impact while also deeply loving fashion. I can’t say I possess some moral high ground, but I will say I’ve made subtle shifts to be more sustainably minded in my own life. Part of that shift has come from prioritizing investing in staples and shopping from eco-friendly brands, but the other half has come from using the designer clothing rental service, Rent The Runway. 

    Since the start of the year, I’ve been using the clothing rental service to curb my spending and lessen my environmental impact. And while it’s not necessarily a solution to the larger issues that plague the industry—I’m one person, after all! Nevertheless, Rent the Runway has changed how we view fashion by destigmatizing second-hand clothing and creating a subculture that rewards re-wearing garments. It’s changing both the industry and individual closets, and to prove that point, I did an in-depth review of the clothing rental service.

    In the first half of this story, you’ll hear from Sarah Tam, Rent the Runway’s chief merchant, about how the service works, her tips for renting clothing, and how the team has expanded its merchandising to include some of the coolest labels.     Even after 7 years of observing and writing about fashion, I still relish the thrill of discovery. It’s partly why I’ve taken up the mantle of highlighting emerging designers and brands in my own work—it’s kind of satisfying to be onto something the general masses aren’t. But admittedly, I feel a little late about discovering Na-kd. If you’re tapped into the hauls and try-on worlds on TikTok and Instagram, perhaps you already know about its affordable separates that magically look expensive despite being less than $100.

    Founded in 2015, and launched online in 2016, the Swedish brand has become a hit for its influencer-led collaborations featuring internet-famous fashion it-girls like Cass Dimicco and Josefine H.J. Na-kd pieces generally fall under $200 (with most just below $100), and thus it’s been able to gain favor among the Zara set, aka those who love an affordable approach to trends. And although its vast selection might rival Zara, Na-kd feels like a different ballgame: the pieces feel a bit more wearable and less directly lifted off the runways. The international crowd seems to be already privy to Na-kd’s world of trend-forward basics (if Instagram is any indication Scandi girls have Na-kd’s blazers especially on rotation), but across the globe, it seems like the U.S. is just catching on. At one point it felt like every blazer or pair of trousers tagged by some of my favorite fashion people came from Na-kd—a clear sign that trying out the brand in real life was necessary.     The best part about living in New York City (no, I’m not going to say the bagels, but I’m sure that’s of significant value for many of the city’s residents) is the proximity to practically every brand under the sun’s brick-and-mortar stores. I like shopping online just as much as the next fashion person. Hell, I even made a career out of it. But nothing beats walking into a physical store, picking up what calls out to you, and trying it on. Even the purchase process is supreme (minus the lines, especially in SoHo). 

    As such, when I decided to do a story surrounding Gap, Banana Republic, and J.Crew—three brands I haven’t, in the past, given tons of attention to—I couldn’t resist going into their actual store locations and going full-on with an entire dressing-room movie montage. Luckily, all three were but a few blocks away from each other on Fifth Avenue, making the idea of an in-person shopping trip all the more enticing. Two hours and 19 items later, I walked to my dinner plans nearby knowing everything I wanted from the trio of retailers and a camera roll of pictures to prove it.

    As fashion editors tell it, skinny jeans are due for a comeback: Celine is endorsing it, and Giselle Bundchen is wearing them again like its 2003—but the 90s-fixated person in me (because honestly, that was such a time in fashion) won’t let baggy denim go. So bring on the puddle pants—I want to be able to swim in my denim. But as effortless as Bella Hadid or Hailey Bieber make it seem, finding good baggy jeans is much more complicated when you’re not a size 2. I previously documented the complicated journey of buying denim when you have a curvier body, and I’m happy to report that it does get easier when it comes to loose-fitting jeans. 

    After trying on dozens of pairs (literally) here are some key tips I discovered along the way: wide-leg or styles that are explicitly baggy are always better. Ultimately these silhouettes will always frame and drape the body better than say sizing up on a style that leans more narrow. Following that line of thinking, don’t be afraid to size up! For some of my all-time favorite jeans, I went up two sizes to secure that effortlessly off-duty model look I love so much. Also, keep this sizing advice in mind especially when it comes to rigid denim (the material doesn’t accommodate curves the way some with spandex in them do!). And lastly, don’t be afraid of taking things to the tailor—so many of my stylist friends consistently get their denim tailored to ensure the best fit possible. Now that you know the shortcuts to finding a great pair of jeans, I’ve assembled a list of my current go-to jeans to achieve the cool-girl loose denim look.     December through January is unofficially Zara season in my book. It’s the legendary end-of-season sale that initially ropes me in, and from then on through the end of January, I become completely fixated on every new drop. I did some major damage during the sale last month (see above for evidence), and now it’s the brand’s most recent collection that’s currently thinning out my pockets. 

    You can always expect something exciting and remarkably on-trend from Zara, and this is no different. One of the standout pieces (which was so good I had to put it first in this story), is a pair of straight-leg jeans with a cool wrapped detail. It’s the type of elevated staple I can see myself wearing non-stop until others start to notice. Also included in the newest drop—elegant knit separates that feel reminiscent of Norma Kamali’s body-shaping power pieces. And it’s not winter without some strong outerwear—there’s plenty of faux fur and sophisticated wool coats on the agenda too.
