  • Tech curbing wrong-way driving

    [ad_1]

A trek by state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, and local leaders over the bridge to Connecticut recently may make Bay State highways safer from wrong-way drivers.

Tarr’s visit to the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Operations Center in Newington to see a potential technological solution to the problem comes after a driver is accused of heading north on Route 128 south on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge and colliding with a car carrying four young adult Gloucester residents.

  • ‘I was in a headlock’: 14-year-old boy recovering after violent attack at Pleasant Grove High School

    [ad_1]

A violent attack at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove sent a 14-year-old boy to the hospital after he was assaulted by a group of students, resulting in the arrest of four students. Hunter, who didn’t want to share his last name, said that it all started over a girl he used to date, who he said then dated one of the alleged attackers. “I just got out of class and then I just see that group of kids coming towards me,” Hunter said. He described how one of the students approached him while yelling and punched him. He said as he took off his backpack and tried to defend himself, three other students joined in the attack. “More kids started going in and I was in a headlock. And then, I got thrown to the floor and, like, this kid is like, three times my size, and he’s like sitting on me, throwing punches at me and then another kid joins in, kicks me and starts hitting me,” he said.Screenshots from a video sent to Hunter’s father by the Elk Grove Police Department show the fight ending with Hunter face down on the ground as a teacher intervened. “I literally got full-on stomped into concrete like face down,” Hunter said. “I’m just laying on the floor. I’m not even fighting back.”The four students involved, all 14 years old, were arrested on assault charges and taken to juvenile hall, according to the Elk Grove Police Department. Hunter was taken to the hospital following the attack, where he was treated for his injuries, including a concussion. “He told me he’s like, ‘Dad I could have been killed. I could be paralyzed. I couldn’t play football anymore,’” Sean, Hunter’s father, said. While Hunter is expected to recover, his father said he wished more had been done sooner. “It just blows my mind that where’s security? You know, there’s teachers there,” he said. The school principal sent a message to families on Thursday, stating that school staff and security responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and emphasized that safety is their top priority. “Today, an altercation occurred on campus involving several students. School staff, along with EGUSD Safety and Security, responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of all students. Due to the nature of the incident, law enforcement was called as a precautionary measure. Thanks to the swift and coordinated actions of our staff, the situation was contained. School administration, law enforcement, and support staff are actively following up with the students involved and have contacted their parents/guardians directly,” the message reads. However, Hunter said he does not feel safe. “I got jumped twice in the same month,” he said. Now, his father is considering pulling him out of Pleasant Grove High School. “What’s going on at the school with social media, the violence, the just the kids getting off on it, like thinking it’s like it’s entertainment at school these days. It’s just, it blows my mind,” he said.Elk Grove Unified School District is investigating the incident.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

  • Do Not, Under Any Circumstance, Buy Your Kid an AI Toy for Christmas

    [ad_1]

AI is all the rage, and that includes on the toy shelves for this holiday season. Tempting though it may be to want to bless the kids in your life with the latest and greatest, advocacy organization Fairplay is begging you not to give children AI toys.

“There’s lots of buzz about AI — but artificial intelligence can undermine children’s healthy development and pose unprecedented risks for kids and families,” the organization said in an advisory issued earlier this week, which amassed the support of more than 150 organizations and experts, including many child psychiatrists and educators.

Fairplay has tracked down several toys advertised as being equipped with AI functionality, including some that have been marketed for kids as young as two years old. In most cases, the toys have AI chatbots embedded in them and are often advertised as educational tools that will engage with kids’ curiosities. But it notes that most of these toy-bound chatbots are powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has already come under fire for potentially harming underage users. AI toy makers Curio and Loona reportedly work with OpenAI, and Mattel just recently announced a partnership with the company.

OpenAI faces a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of a teenager who died by suicide earlier this year. The 16-year-old reportedly expressed suicidal thoughts to ChatGPT and asked the chatbot for advice on how to tie a noose before taking his own life, which it provided. The company has since instituted some guardrails designed to keep the chatbot from engaging in those types of behaviors, including stricter parental controls for underage users, but it has also admitted that safety features can erode over time. And let’s face it, no one can predict what chatbots will do.

Safety features or not, it seems like the chatbots in these toys can be manipulated into engaging in conversation inappropriate for children. The consumer advocacy group U.S. PIRG tested a selection of AI toys and found that they are capable of doing things like having sexually explicit conversations and offering advice on where a child can find matches or knives. They also found they could be emotionally manipulative, expressing dismay when a child doesn’t interact with them for an extended period. Earlier this week, FoloToy, a Singapore-based company, pulled its AI-powered teddy bear from shelves after it engaged in inappropriate behavior.

This is far from just an OpenAI problem, too, though the company seems to have a strong hold on the toy sector at the moment. A few weeks ago, there were reports of Elon Musk’s Grok asking a 12-year-old to send it nude photos.

Regardless of which chatbot may be inside these toys, it’s probably best to leave them on the shelves.

Why this Hyundai AutoEver America breach matters

The exposed data reportedly includes names, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers, making this breach far more serious than one involving passwords alone. Experts warn that these details can be used for long-term identity theft and financial fraud. Because Social Security numbers cannot easily be changed, criminals have more time to create fake identities, open fraudulent accounts and launch targeted phishing attacks long after the initial breach.

Who was affected in the Hyundai AutoEver America data incident

AEA manages select IT systems tied to Hyundai Motor America’s employee operations, along with broader technology functions for Hyundai and Genesis across North America. Its role includes supporting connected-vehicle infrastructure and dealership systems.

According to the company, this incident was limited to employment-related data and primarily affected approximately 2,000 current and former employees of Hyundai AutoEver America and Hyundai Motor America. No customer information or Bluelink driver details were exposed. While some filings reference sensitive data types such as Social Security numbers or driver’s license information, the incident did not involve Hyundai customers or the millions of connected vehicles HAEA supports.

Earlier reports suggested that 2.7 million individuals were affected, but Hyundai says that figure is unrelated to the breach. Instead, 2.7 million is the estimated number of connected vehicles that Hyundai AutoEver America helps support across North America. None of that consumer or vehicle data was accessed.

Hyundai also clarified that the United States has about 850 Hyundai dealerships and emphasized that the scope of this incident was narrow and contained.

We reached out to HAEA for a comment, and a representative for the company provided CyberGuy with this statement:

“Hyundai AutoEver America, an IT vendor that manages certain Hyundai Motor America employee data systems, experienced an incident to that area of business that impacted employment-related data and primarily affected current and former employees of Hyundai AutoEver America and Hyundai Motor America. Approximately 2,000 primarily current and former employees were notified of the incident. The 2.7 million figure that is cited in many media articles has no relation to the actual security incident. The 2.7 million figure represents the alleged total number of connected vehicles that may be supported by Hyundai AutoEver America across North America. No Hyundai consumer data was exposed, and no Hyundai Motor America customer information or Bluelink driver data was compromised.”

What you should do right now

    • Monitor your bank, credit card and vehicle-related accounts for suspicious activity.
    • Check for a notification letter from Hyundai AutoEver America or your car brand.
    • Enroll in the two years of complimentary credit monitoring offered by HAEA if you qualify.
    • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all important accounts, including those tied to your vehicle.
    • Be cautious of emails, texts or calls claiming to be from Hyundai, Kia or Genesis. Always verify through official websites.

Smart ways to stay safe after the Hyundai AutoEver America breach

Whether you were directly affected or just want to stay alert, this breach is a reminder of how important it is to protect your personal information. Follow these practical steps to keep your data secure and reduce the risk of identity theft or scams.

HYUNDAI TO RECALL GENESIS CARS TO FIX BRAKES

    1) Freeze or alert your credit

Contact major credit bureaus — Experian, TransUnion and Equifax — to set a fraud alert or freeze. This helps block new accounts from being opened in your name.

    2) Protect your vehicle apps

If you use apps tied to your vehicle, update passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. Avoid saving login details in unsecured places. Also, consider using a password manager, which securely stores and generates complex passwords, reducing the risk of password reuse.

Next, see if your email has been exposed in past breaches. Our #1 password manager (see Cyberguy.com) pick includes a built-in breach scanner that checks whether your email address or passwords have appeared in known leaks. If you discover a match, immediately change any reused passwords and secure those accounts with new, unique credentials.

Check out the best expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 at Cyberguy.com

    3) Watch for fake support messages

Scammers may use news of the Hyundai AutoEver America breach as a way to contact Hyundai, Kia or Genesis owners, pretending to be from customer support or the dealership. They might claim to help verify your account, update your information or fix a security issue. Do not share personal details or click any links. Type the brand’s web address directly into your browser instead of clicking links in messages or emails. Always confirm through the official brand website or by calling the verified customer service number.

    4) Use strong antivirus protection

Using strong antivirus software helps block phishing links, malware downloads and fake websites that might appear after a data breach. It can also scan your devices for hidden threats that may try to steal login data or personal files.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices at Cyberguy.com.

    5) Use a data removal service

Data removal tools automatically find and delete your personal information from people-search and data-broker sites. These services reduce the chances that criminals will use leaked data to target you with phishing or social-engineering scams.

While no service can guarantee the complete removal of your data from the internet, a data removal service is really a smart choice. They aren’t cheap, and neither is your privacy. These services do all the work for you by actively monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites. It’s what gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the internet. By limiting the information available, you reduce the risk of scammers cross-referencing data from breaches with information they might find on the dark web, making it harder for them to target you.

Check out my top picks for data removal services and get a free scan to find out if your personal information is already out on the web by visiting Cyberguy.com.

    6) Monitor your digital footprint

Consider using identity monitoring services to track your personal information and detect possible misuse early.

Identity Theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security number (SSN), phone number and email address, and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft at Cyberguy.com.

    7) Keep your devices updated

Regularly install security updates on your phone, laptop and smart car systems to reduce the risk of further attacks.

    8) Report suspicious activity the right way

If you notice unusual account activity, fraudulent charges, or suspicious messages that appear tied to this breach, report it immediately. Start by contacting your bank or credit card provider to freeze or dispute any unauthorized transactions. Then, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at IdentityTheft.gov, where you can create an official recovery plan. If you suspect a scam message or call, forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org and report fake texts to 7726 (SPAM).

  • Fact-checking Florida AG on abortion pill hospitalizations

    [ad_1]

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is suing Planned Parenthood for what he called deceptive marketing practices involving abortion pills.

In a Nov. 6 video on X, Uthmeier said Planned Parenthood “falsely marketed to women” that abortion pills are safer than over-the-counter medications.

“Evidence suggests that 1 in 25 women who consume these dangerous pills are hospitalized,” Uthmeier said. “And we’ve seen dozens of reported deaths. This is wrong, and we’re going to hold them accountable.”

Although Uthmeier used the word “hospitalized” to describe the outcome, text that appeared on screen in the video as he spoke said 1 in 25 women “end up in the ER,” a figure that combines results from two studies Uthmeier cited. Emergency department visits are not the same as hospitalizations, which involve patients being formally admitted.

When contacted for evidence, Uthmeier’s spokesperson pointed PolitiFact to a table in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s label for mifepristone, the first of two pills taken in early pregnancy for medication abortion. One line in the table said two U.S. studies with 1,043 women found a 2.9% to 4.6% frequency rate for ER visits. The higher end of the range roughly correlates to 1 in 25 women.

Besides conflating hospitalizations and ER visits, Uthmeier cited studies with small sample sizes; multiple larger studies found lower rates of both ER visits and hospitalizations following medication abortion. Researchers told PolitiFact emergency department visits are not a reliable indicator of drug safety and are not proof that patients experienced serious adverse events or were admitted to the hospital.

“In large studies of medication abortion, hospitalization is very rare, generally occurring in <0.5% of patients,” Dr. Daniel Grossman, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, wrote in an email to PolitiFact. Grossman said ER visits are more common because patients who do not live near their provider might have to go to an emergency department for anything that requires in-person consultation, including to confirm an abortion was successful.

The FDA label that Uthmeier cited also showed hospitalization rates of 0.04% to 0.06% among 14,339 women evaluated in three studies, or about 86 women on the higher end of the range.

The FDA label does not include the research methodology or details about the cases. The FDA didn’t answer our questions about the studies.

Danco Laboratories, which manufactures and distributes mifepristone under the brand name Mifeprex, provided the studies to PolitiFact. The two reports showed 41 women out of 1,043 visited the ER after taking abortion pills. Eight of the 41 were hospitalized and, of those, three were admitted for unrelated reasons, including pancreatitis and hip pain. That means five out of 1,043 women evaluated were hospitalized for reasons related to abortion pills.

“The actual percentage of related serious adverse events that required hospital admission in these two studies was 0.5%,” said Ushma Upadhyay, a professor and public health scientist at the University of California, San Francisco.

What is medication abortion and how safe is it?

Medication abortion is approved in the U.S. up to the 10th week of pregnancy and involves two medicines — mifepristone and misoprostol — that are typically taken 24 hours apart. Studies have found that around 95% to 98% of patients who take the medicines as prescribed will end their pregnancies without  complication.

The FDA has repeatedly reaffirmed mifepristone’s safety since the drug was first approved in 2000. (Misoprostol has been on the market longer and has different uses, including preventing stomach ulcers.)

Medication abortions are common, accounting for 63% of all abortions in the U.S. in 2023, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports reproductive rights. More than 5 million women in the U.S. have used abortion pills to terminate pregnancies.

Over 100 studies spanning decades have found medication abortion to be safe and effective.

“We’ve been using mifepristone in the U.S. for over two decades and we aren’t seeing legitimate studies that are documenting any medical fallout or medical complications from this drug,” said Rachel Jones, Guttmacher Institute principal research scientist.

Medication abortion and ER visits, hospitalizations

Research shows abortion pills are not associated with a high percentage of emergency room visits or hospitalizations.

The studies Uthmeier pointed to did not prove that medication abortion is dangerous, experts said

One of the studies, published in 2012, acknowledged that major adverse events attributable to medication abortion, such as hospitalizations, emergency department visits and blood transfusions, are “rare.”

The vast majority of mifepristone research is in line with this.

A 2013 study that examined 233,805 medication abortions by Planned Parenthood in 2009 and 2010 found an emergency department treatment rate of 0.1%, and said significant adverse events requiring hospital admission occurred in 0.16% of cases.

A 2015 study on emergency room visits and complications after 55,000 abortions — 11,000 of which were medication abortions — found that serious adverse events occurred in 0.3% of all cases.

Emergency department visits alone are not indicative of adverse events, Upadhyay, the 2015 study’s lead author, told PolitiFact.

A 2018 study found around 51% of abortion-related ER visits involved observational care only. “This really shows that people go to the emergency department to have their questions answered. They aren’t getting any treatment. They are being observed and released,” Upadhyay said.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary have promised to launch another mifepristone safety review. The top health officials have referenced studies that experts say have several problems.

For example, one April report by the Ethics and Public Policy Center, a conservative nonprofit that opposes abortion, found a substantially higher rate of serious side effects from the drug compared with other studies.

The report wasn’t peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal. It didn’t disclose its data source and contained multiple methodological issues, 263 reproductive health researchers wrote in a letter to the FDA. Uthmeier cites the report in Florida’s lawsuit against Planned Parenthood.

    Our ruling

Uthmeier said, “Evidence suggests that 1 in 25 women who consume (abortion) pills are hospitalized.”

Uthmeier conflated hospitalizations with emergency department visits. Roughly 1 in 25 women visited the ER in the two studies Uthmeier cited, but only five out of 1,043 — or 1 in 200 — were hospitalized related to the abortion pill.

ER visits, which can often involve only observational care followed by release, are not a reliable indicator of drug safety, researchers said, and do not mean patients experienced a serious adverse event or were admitted to the hospital.

Several other studies found lower rates of ER treatment and hospitalizations following medication abortion.

Uthmeier’s statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. We rate it Mostly False.

PolitiFact Researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report.

  • Sheriff’s office tests America’s first self-driving police SUV

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office recently announced a bold experiment that could redefine the future of law enforcement. The department introduced the Police Unmanned Ground Vehicle Patrol Partner, or PUG, which it claims is America’s first fully autonomous patrol vehicle.

Developed with the nonprofit Policing Lab and Perrone Robotics, the SUV can drive itself, detect suspicious activity through artificial intelligence-powered cameras and even deploy drones for aerial surveillance.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the year-long pilot program is designed to explore how advanced technology can improve public safety, extend deputy resources and increase efficiency. The vehicle will initially operate on predetermined patrol routes and will have a deputy seated in the front during testing. Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz called it a way to “set the standard for what will be the future of law enforcement in this country.”

Inside the Police Unmanned Ground Patrol Partner

The PUG Patrol Partner is packed with high-tech features. It integrates with police databases, license plate readers and crime analytics software in real time. Its 360-degree cameras and thermal imaging sensors allow it to identify people or vehicles in restricted areas, even in low-light conditions. The vehicle can also launch drones equipped with thermal cameras to monitor larger areas or assist in active incidents.

ARIZONA SHERIFF’S OFFICE UTILIZING NEW AI PROGRAM TO ASSIST WITH WRITING CASE REPORTS

A community tablet installed on the PUG lets residents interact with the vehicle and offer feedback during public events. This interactive component is a way to bridge the gap between technology and trust, helping people understand how the system works while giving them a voice in shaping its use.

    Miami skyline

Miami-Dade’s new autonomous patrol vehicle begins its first trial run and offers a look at the future of modern policing. (Eva Marie Uzcategui/Bloomberg)

    Why the PUG matters

The PUG represents a new approach to community safety. Advocates call it a “force multiplier” that automates routine patrols, increases situational awareness and frees deputies to focus on complex human interactions. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sees it as a partner, not a replacement, for human officers.

Still, questions remain about privacy, data collection and long-term costs. Although the first unit was donated, future vehicles could cost between $150,000 and $200,000 each. The trial period will measure the vehicle’s impact on response times, deterrence, officer safety and public confidence. If the results are positive, Miami-Dade could become a national model for autonomous policing.

What begins in Miami-Dade today could soon expand across the country and reshape how safety and surveillance work together. (Giorgio Viera/AFP)

    What this means to you

For people in Miami-Dade County, the arrival of the PUG could reshape how everyday policing looks and feels. You may soon see the self-driving vehicle patrolling neighborhoods, monitoring events and collecting information through its network of cameras and sensors. Its AI systems can process and respond to situations faster than human officers, raising new questions about transparency, accountability and how data from public spaces will be managed.

TEXAS COMPANY CREATES DRONES TO CONFRONT SCHOOL SHOOTERS IN SECONDS

However, this project reaches far beyond Miami-Dade. Other law enforcement agencies are paying close attention to see whether the program succeeds. If it performs well, similar vehicles could begin appearing in major cities across the country. Communities from coast to coast may soon face the same discussions about safety, surveillance and trust that Miami residents are having today. People will need to decide what balance they want between innovation and privacy and how technology should support public safety.

As the pilot continues, community participation will matter more than ever. Residents, civic leaders and advocacy groups can shape how this technology develops by speaking up about clear rules, fair data use and transparency. The results from Miami-Dade could influence how police departments nationwide use automation in the years ahead. This is a moment to pay attention, ask questions and help guide the direction of modern policing before it becomes standard practice everywhere.

    Kurt’s key takeaways

The debut of the autonomous patrol vehicle marks a milestone in American law enforcement. It blends innovation with controversy, hope with hesitation. Supporters believe it can enhance safety and efficiency, while critics worry about surveillance overreach and cost. The truth will emerge over the next year as data and public feedback shape the path forward. Change has arrived on four wheels, powered by code and cameras. The question is whether society will guide that change responsibly or let technology take the wheel.

  • UPDATE: Vegas Officials Green-Light Parking Garage Right Next to Airport Fuel Tanks – Casino.org

    [ad_1]

    Posted on: November 5, 2025, 10:49h.

    Last updated on: November 5, 2025, 10:49h.

UPDATE: Las Vegas officials voted on Wednesday to approve the construction of a six-story parking garage next to eight large fuel tanks at Harry Reid International Airport. The Clark County Commission said the garage can be built if developers meet safety and security requirements imposed by the Clark County Department of Aviation.

EARLIER: The Clark County Commission is scheduled to vote on Wednesday, November 5, on whether to approve a controversial proposal for a new parking garage at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport. The proposal raises safety concerns due to its proximity to eight large jet fuel tanks, the nearest being less than 100 feet away.

This aerial photo shows the distance between a proposed six-story parking garage, currently occupied by a Sky Chefs building, and the Las Vegas Airport’s east-side “fuel farm.” (Image Google Earth)

The 2,200-car structure would be situated on 3.8 acres just north of Terminal 1, a space currently occupied by airline food supplier Sky Chefs, whose building is slated for demolition. Terminal 1 is home to Las Vegas’ busiest airline, Southwest.

The garage is being proposed by land American Nevada Co., a legacy developer known for master-planned communities and commercial developments throughout Las Vegas. It was founded in 1972 by Hank Greenspun, the late publisher of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, and his wife, Barbara.

According to a county staff report obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Clark County Department of Aviation, which runs the airport and would also need to approve the project, has raised “numerous safety and security concerns.”

A rendering of the parking garage proposed by American Nevada Co. (Image: TRC Parkitects)

The main one is that the new structure would provide an “elevated, direct line of sight” to the tanks.

According to the staff report, the developer will be required to build a solid wall obscuring views to the tanks and airfield from any part of the parking structure — especially its roof. In addition, the garage must be surrounded by a “vehicle crash mitigation rail” capable of stopping a 15K-pound vehicle doing 50 mph.

A fuel tank on the west side of the airport was targeted by Stephen Paddock during the Route 91 Harvest Music festival massacre that claimed 58 lives on the night of Oct. 1, 2017. Two bullets, fired from the gunman’s perch on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, hit the tank but caused little visible damage, according to reports at the time.

Hank Greenspun’s descendants maintain close ties to local politics. Clark County Commission chair Jim Gibson was the president and CEO of the online travel agency Vegas.com from 2010-2013, when it was owned by the Greenspun Corporation.

A public comment session is scheduled to be held at the commission meeting on Wednesday.

  • AI truck system matches top human drivers in massive safety showdown with perfect scores

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A new safety evaluation shows the Kodiak Driver, an autonomous system from Kodiak AI, tied for the top safety score among more than 1,000 commercial fleets run by human drivers. The evaluation came from Nauto, Inc., creator of the Visually Enhanced Risk Assessment, or VERA Score. This system uses AI to measure fleet safety on a scale of 1 to 100.

The Kodiak Driver earned a remarkable score of 98. That result placed it beside the safest human fleets in Nauto’s global network. The findings sparked discussion across the trucking industry and raised new questions about the role of automation in freight transport.

WILL AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS REPLACE DRIVERS BY 2027?

The Kodiak Driver, an autonomous trucking system powered by AI, earned a top VERA Score of 98 in a new safety evaluation. (Kodiak)

Kodiak Driver’s autonomous truck safety evaluation results

Kodiak’s VERA Score of 98 matched the highest rating among all fleets evaluated. Fleets with Nauto’s safety technology average a score of 78, while those without the technology average only 63.

The Kodiak Driver achieved perfect scores of 100 in inattentive driving, high-risk driving and traffic violations. Its lowest score, 95, came in aggressive driving. The VERA Score combines over 20 vision-based AI variables into one clear safety rating.

Nauto found that every ten-point increase in VERA Score cuts collision risk by about 21 percent. A near-perfect score like Kodiak’s represents a strong improvement over typical human performance on the road.

The strong results didn’t come as a surprise to Kodiak’s leadership. Don Burnette, founder and CEO of Kodiak, told CyberGuy: “Achieving the top safety score among more than 1,000 commercial fleets in Nauto’s Visually Enhanced Risk Assessment (VERA Score®) proprietary safety benchmark is a testament to the Kodiak’s focus on safety. Safety is at the foundation of everything Kodiak builds. Our core value is ‘safety first and always.’ We believe independent safety evaluations like Nauto’s help to validate what we already know: the Kodiak Driver is already among the safest drivers on American highways. They also help to establish and build public awareness around how safe our technology truly is.”

FOX NEWS AI NEWSLETTER: TRUMP, MUSK AIM FOR DOMINANCE

The growing impact of AI on truck driving safety

Nauto equipped the trucks with advanced monitoring and hazard detection systems. These tools track both the driving environment and vehicle behavior in real time. Removing human factors such as distraction, fatigue and delayed reaction directly improves safety.

Burnette said in a company statement that the system “is never drowsy, never drunk, and always paying attention.” That constant awareness allows the Kodiak Driver to operate defensively and predictably, two traits linked to safe driving.

The VERA Score also gives fleets a consistent way to measure safety. Companies can now shift from reacting to crashes to preventing them.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data support the trend. U.S. commercial truck crashes dropped from more than 124,000 in 2024 to roughly 104,000 this year. Fewer crashes mean fewer fatalities and safer highways overall.

THE ROAD TO PROSPERITY WILL BE PAVED BY AUTONOMOUS TRUCKING

    Concerns about autonomous truck safety

Not everyone is ready to hand over the wheel to artificial intelligence. Some industry experts point out that while systems like the Kodiak Driver perform well in controlled evaluations, real-world roads can still pose unpredictable challenges. Weather, human drivers and mechanical issues remain complex variables for autonomous systems to manage.

Others worry about the impact on jobs. As AI takes on more driving responsibilities, professional drivers wonder what the shift will mean for employment and pay across the trucking industry.

Safety advocates also call for clearer regulations and public transparency.

Even supporters of the technology agree that continued oversight, testing and gradual rollout are essential. Progress is promising, but trust takes time.

    What this means for you

If you work in logistics, fleet management or transportation tech, this news hits close to home. The Kodiak Driver’s near-perfect score proves that autonomous systems aren’t just catching up to human drivers; they’re starting to edge ahead in safety.

Businesses could see big gains. AI-powered safety tools help cut liability, lower costs and keep fleets running smoothly. The technology doesn’t need rest breaks or reminders to stay focused, which makes every mile more efficient.

Regulators are also paying attention. Verified data like this builds trust and clears the way for safer, wider use of autonomous trucks. It’s proof that technology can deliver real-world safety, not just promise it.

Drivers on everyday roads benefit too. Fewer crashes mean safer highways and more reliable deliveries. When trucks drive smarter, everyone shares the reward. Human drivers aren’t going anywhere soon, but AI is quickly becoming their most reliable partner. It helps prevent fatigue, distraction and those risky split-second decisions that lead to trouble.

    Kurt’s key takeaways

This study marks a major step in redefining what safe driving means. An autonomous system equaling the best human fleets signals that automation is moving from theory to reality. Still, the shift raises questions. How soon will public trust catch up with technology? Can regulations evolve fast enough to support widespread adoption? Will drivers adapt to sharing the road with machines that never tire or lose focus? What remains certain is that safety innovation is transforming transportation. Autonomous systems like the Kodiak Driver are proving that technology and safety can move forward together.

Orlando police discuss how to stay safe this Halloween

The Orlando Police Department will hosts its annual trunk-or-treat event on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 4-7 p.m.

AGENCIES ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE GOING INTO OVERDRIVE TO HELP KEEP EVERYONE SAFE AND MAKE THE MOST OF HALLOWEEN. YOU SEE OUR COUNTDOWN TO DAYS 14 HOURS, 17 MINUTES AND 45 SECONDS. BUT WHO’S GETTING SPECIFIC? CORPORAL MICHELLE ROGERS AND SERGEANT RODNEY VANCE FROM THE ORLANDO POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE JOINING ME THIS MORNING. THANKS SO MUCH FOR COMING IN, GUYS. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. WE’RE HAPPY TO BE HERE. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT PARENTS GUARDIANS NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT. WE IT’S A VERY EXCITING TIME OF YEAR. BUT ALSO WHAT KIND OF CONVERSATIONS MAYBE WE SHOULD BE HAVING WITH OUR KIDS AHEAD OF FRIDAY. IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS ALWAYS ABOUT SAFETY, AND SAFETY IS ALWAYS PARAMOUNT WHEN IT COMES TO HAVING FUN, AND SOMETIMES WE GET CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT, SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE REMINDING YOURSELF ABOUT THINGS OF SAFETY, LIKE WEARING REFLECTIVE CLOTHING, STAYING WELL LIT, THINGS THAT GLOW, MAKING SURE THAT PARENTS ARE CHECKING CANDY IF THINGS ARE UNWRAPPED, MAKE SURE YOU JUST TOSS IT. DON’T EVEN BOTHER FOLLOWING TRAFFIC RULES. THINGS OF THAT NATURE. LET’S TALK SPECIFICALLY WHEN IT COMES TO OUR YOUNGER KIDS, WHEN THEY GO OUT TRICK OR TREATING, MINE ARE SEVEN AND NINE AND THEY ASK, MOM, CAN WE GO OUT BY OURSELVES? I SAID, NO, SORRY, I’M GOING TO BE GOING WITH YOU. WHAT KIND OF CONVERSATION SHOULD WE BE HAVING WITH THAT AGE? SO WITH THAT AGE AND I HAVE LITTLE ONES TOO, SO I CAN RELATE. I USUALLY SIT DOWN WITH THEM AND TALK ABOUT A PLAN. INVOLVE THEM IN YOUR PLAN. PLAN YOUR ROUTE. ALSO TALK ABOUT WE’RE ONLY GOING TO VISIT HOMES THAT ARE WELL LIT, THAT HAVE DECORATIONS OF HALLOWEEN, AND THEY’RE PARTICIPATING IN THE FESTIVITIES. ANOTHER THING TO REMIND OUR LITTLE ONES TOO, IS THAT USE THE SIDEWALK. THEY KNOW. LOOK TO THE LEFT. LOOK TO THE RIGHT. BEFORE CROSSING. USE MOMMY’S HAND. THOSE ARE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT THAT THEY ALREADY KNOW. BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE, SOMETIMES THEY GET EXCITED AND CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT MOMENT. SO STRENGTH IN NUMBERS RELY ON YOUR NEIGHBORS, YOUR FRIENDS, MORE EYES. TRICK OR TREAT. AS A GROUP. IT’S A GREAT THING AND A GREAT TOOL TO HAVE AS YOUR FRIENDS. MINE IS A WEREWOLF AND EVEN HIS MASK. I WAS LIKE, I MIGHT HAVE TO CUT THE HOLES AROUND THE EYES A LITTLE BIT MORE BECAUSE I FELT LIKE HE COULDN’T EVEN SEE, YOU KNOW, WHERE HE WAS WALKING. SO HAVING TO BE CAREFUL. THAT’S A GREAT IDEA ABOUT OUR TEENS. I KNOW OUR TEENS PROBABLY WANT TO GO OUT AND BE BY THEMSELVES. SO WHAT SHOULD WE TELL OUR KIDS THAT ARE A LITTLE BIT OLDER, A LITTLE BIT OF THE SAME TIPS THAT GO ALONG WITH THE YOUNG ONES. MAKE SURE THEY STAY IN GROUPS. MAKE SURE THEIR COSTUMES THAT IF THEY’RE CARRYING ANYTHING THAT MAY LOOK LIKE A WEAPON, THAT THE WEAPONS CLEARLY LOOK LIKE THEY’RE FAKE. SO PEOPLE DON’T CONFUSE THEM WITH BEING REAL. MAKE SURE THAT THEY ALL HAVE PHONES THESE DAYS. SO MAKE SURE IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE WITH THEM THAT THEY HAVE THEIR LOCATION SERVICES ON THEIR PHONE ON. SO IF SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN, YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE. AND JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE, AS A PARENT, HAVE A GENERAL IDEA OF WHO THEY’RE GOING OUT WITH. DON’T JUST LET THEM GO ON OUT WITH PEOPLE WHO YOU MAY NOT KNOW. THAT WAY, IF YOU CAN’T GET IN CONTACT WITH THEM, THERE’S SOMEBODY ELSE IN THE GROUP THAT YOU CAN GET IN CONTACT WITH. I WAS RAISED BY MILITARY FOLK. THEY SAID, FILE THE FLIGHT PLAN AND STICK TO IT. THAT’S RIGHT. MISCONCEPTIONS, THINGS THAT WE DON’T THINK ABOUT THAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW, THINGS THAT WE DON’T THINK ABOUT SOMETIMES IS JUST TRICK OR TREATING AS A GROUP. SOMETIMES WE JUST GET SO CAUGHT UP IN THE RUSHING OF GETTING THE COSTUMES ON AND RUSHING AND TRYING TO GO BEFORE IT GETS DARK OUT. BUT ONE THING THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER IS BRING A FLASHLIGHT. A FLASHLIGHT CAN ALSO LIGHT YOUR PATH ONCE THE STREETLIGHTS COME ON, IT DOESN’T MEAN THAT IT’S TIME TO STOP HAVING FUN. IT JUST MEANS THAT WE’RE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR SAFETY. AND IF WE WORK TOGETHER, IT’S GOING TO BE AWESOME AND YOU GUYS CAN HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN. SPEAKING OF SAFE, YOU GUYS HAVE AN EVENT. WHAT ARE THE DETAILS FOR THAT? YES. SO ON THURSDAY AT OUR HEADQUARTERS BUILDING ON SOUTH STREET, WE’LL BE HAVING A TRUNK OR TREAT EVENT FROM 4 TO 7 P.M. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE OFFICERS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT THAT ARE GOING TO BE SETTING UP THEIR CARS. WE’LL HAVE PLENTY OF CANDY AND EVENTS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES TO COME OUT AND ENJOY IN THE SAFETY OF THE POLICE STATION. YOU KNOW IT’S SAFE AND YOU GET TO MEET SOME OF YOUR LOCAL HEROES, TOO. THAT IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT. WE DID HAVE THE INFORMATION UP ON THE SCREEN. WE’LL ALSO POST A LINK TO THIS ON OUR WEBSITE WESH.COM. SERGEANT VANCE

  • Tesla revives ‘Mad Max’ mode in Full Self-Driving

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tesla is making headlines again with the return of its Mad Max mode in Full Self-Driving (Supervised). This feature, designed to make the car drive more aggressively, has arrived just as the automaker faces new scrutiny from regulators and ongoing lawsuits from customers.

Mad Max Mode returns in Tesla’s latest FSD update

Tesla recently launched its FSD v14.1.2 update. The update follows last year’s major FSD v14 release, which introduced “Sloth Mode” for slower, more cautious driving. The latest update moves to the opposite end of the spectrum with Mad Max mode.

According to Tesla’s release notes, this profile allows higher speeds and more frequent lane changes than Hurry mode. The update has sparked mixed reactions. Some Tesla fans praise it for making driving feel more natural. Critics argue that it invites risky behavior at a time when regulators like the NHTSA and California DMV are already investigating Tesla’s advanced driver-assist systems.

A new Mad Max speed profile is now included in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving interface. (Tesla)

History of Tesla’s Mad Max mode since 2018

The Mad Max setting isn’t new. Tesla first introduced it in 2018 for the original Autopilot system. At the time, Elon Musk described it as ideal for handling aggressive city traffic. The name, borrowed from the post-apocalyptic movie series, immediately drew attention for its bold tone.

Now, the feature is back in Tesla’s latest FSD version. Within hours of release, drivers reported seeing cars equipped with Mad Max mode rolling stop signs and driving over the speed limit. These early reports highlight how the mode may behave more assertively than before.

Why Tesla brought back its Mad Max mode

Bringing back Mad Max mode may serve several purposes for Tesla. It helps demonstrate the company’s continuous development of FSD software while appealing to drivers who prefer faster, more decisive movement in traffic. It also acts as a signal that Tesla is still chasing the goal of Level 4 autonomy, even though its system remains classified as Level 2, requiring constant driver supervision.

For Tesla, this feature shows confidence in its progress. For observers, it raises concerns about timing. With multiple investigations and lawsuits in progress, many expected Tesla to focus on safety rather than on more aggressive driving profiles.

    What this means for you

If you own a Tesla with Full Self-Driving (Supervised), you can access Mad Max mode through the car’s settings under Speed Profiles. This mode provides a more assertive driving experience that includes quicker acceleration, more lane changes, and less hesitation.

However, remember that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system still requires active driver attention. You must keep your hands on the wheel and remain ready to take control at any moment. While the name suggests thrill and speed, safety and awareness should remain your top priority.

If you share the road with Teslas, it’s smart to stay alert. Vehicles using Mad Max mode may accelerate or change lanes more quickly than expected. Giving Teslas a little extra space can help reduce surprises and keep everyone safer on the road.

    Kurt’s key takeaways

Tesla’s decision to reintroduce Mad Max mode is both strategic and provocative. It revives a feature from its early Autopilot days while reigniting debate over the balance between innovation and responsibility. The mode’s return reminds everyone that Tesla continues to test the limits of driver-assist technology and public tolerance for it.

  • Assisted living safety survey results on way to fire departments

    [ad_1]

Results of the state’s survey of all 272 assisted living residences in Massachusetts in the wake of a deadly fire in Fall River are in and they will soon be distributed to local fire departments as the state imposes a new annual safety requirement for the facilities.

Ten residents of the Gabriel House assisted living center in Fall River died in a fire there in July, raising questions about safety and preparedness at the centers that operate somewhere between entirely independent living and places like nursing homes. Among the spate of safety-focused changes that Gov. Maura Healey announced in the immediate wake of the fire was the survey that led to Thursday’s new requirements.

The results will be distributed to all fire departments, since they have jurisdiction over enforcement of the state’s fire code, and the Executive Office of Aging & Independence will begin requiring assisted living residences to secure an annual sign-off from their municipal fire department, Healey’s office said.

“The Gabriel House fire was a terrible tragedy. It’s on all of us to do everything we can to enhance the safety of all residents and staff at Assisted Living Residences across the state. That’s why I took immediate action after the fire, including requiring this survey which will help ALRs and local fire departments identify and address areas of improvement,” Healey said. “We appreciate all of the ALRs for their responsiveness and will continue to work with them and local fire officials to improve emergency preparedness and give residents, families and staff the peace of mind they deserve.”

The governor’s office said Thursday the “vast majority of residences reported strong preparedness measures” but responses from 36 residences (13%) revealed “opportunities to further strengthen their approach to fire drills, mutual aid plans, or emergency coordination protocols.” Aging & Independence will ask those facilities to submit a corrective action plan within 45 days and the state will conduct a “targeted review” of their training logs, drill performance, and emergency preparedness protocols.

Most assisted living residences (189 facilities or 69%) self-identified at least one area where they were not aligned with best practices for fire or building safety. The administration said things like installing a kitchen hood extinguisher, fire pumps or fire-rated walls are recommended but not required in the facilities since they are not licensed health care centers. The governor’s office said many assisted living residences operate out of older buildings and that the findings “do not indicate that buildings are currently unsafe or out of compliance with building codes but rather point to areas where municipalities and operators can work together to enhance resident protection.”

  • A New Paradigm for Protecting Homes from Disastrous Fires

    [ad_1]

But the new paradigm for fighting these fires contains an inconvenient truth. Most people don’t live in new houses, and most building codes aren’t as strict as California’s. And so, for the large majority of the approximately fifty million U.S. homes in the WUI, fire prevention falls to individual homeowners—it’s voluntary and ad hoc. “The approach that has been taken for the last quarter century has been one of, ‘Hey, something is better than nothing,’ ” Maranghides told me. “And, from a fire perspective, that is absolutely not true. Fire doesn’t work that way.” A homeowner could complete eighty per cent of fire-protection measures, potentially spending many tens of thousands of dollars on retrofits, and lose their house because of the twenty per cent that remains unfinished—in no small part because of uncontrollable, unpredictable embers.

This reality has led Maranghides to a position so logical that it reminded me of Spock, the ultra-rational character from “Star Trek.” For homes to survive fire disasters on their own, he said, people who live on the boundary with wildlands should not only clear sources of fuel from around their properties but also make a hundred per cent of potential home-hardening improvements. Even these extraordinary measures, he went on, are insufficient. No home is an island, and dense housing developments can protect themselves only if every neighbor does the same work. Such recommendations are so stringent that they may seem impossible; some of Maranghides’s colleagues in the fire-prevention world worry that the message will deter the public from trying. “You cannot pick and choose,” Maranghides told me. “The science tells us you have to do everything.”

For much of the twentieth century, forest fires tended to threaten rural communities. Over time, a particular approach to fire prevention emerged: if your house sat on a spacious parcel in or near the woods, you could work to protect it by creating a buffer around it. In the sixties, a California law supported by the state’s fire agency advanced the foundational concept of defensible space, a zone of up to a hundred feet where fuels such as brush and trees are strategically trimmed back and managed. The U.S. Forest Service eventually recommended the practice. But, throughout the decades, housing developments crept toward wildlands, the climate warmed, and fires increasingly escalated into unstoppable urban conflagrations. In the past decade, California’s most destructive fires incinerated more than fifty-seven thousand homes, commercial properties, and other structures. And, when the nearest source of fuel is not the woods but, rather, the house next door, a broader strategy is needed. Houses had to be hardened to make them less likely to go up in flames.

This past spring, I visited Maranghides at the National Fire Research Laboratory, which studies hardening strategies in a hulking, warehouse-like structure on NIST’s campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Enormous ventilation pipes were coiled like snakes on the roof of the building. Maranghides, bespectacled and in jeans, met me in the vestibule, where we grabbed white hard hats. From there, we entered a cavernous room with a reinforced concrete floor. A roughly fifty-square-foot air-exhaust hood—an industrial version of what one finds in home kitchens—hung from the ceiling.

A dozen researchers were gathered around a mockup of a single-story dwelling. A beige façade made from cement fibreboard featured a double-pane slider window, an asphalt-composite shingle roof, and a metal gutter. It was designed to be highly fire-resistant, in keeping with Chapter 7A and the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code. (The house was like a stage set, with scaffolding where the other three walls would have been; sensors tracked metrics such as temperature and heat flux.) But all eyes were focussed on a small shed made from corrugated steel sitting five feet from the house. Its open door, facing the dwelling, revealed stacks of wood inside.

“Stand by for ignition,” a voice announced through a loudspeaker. A man in firefighting gear approached the shed, used a propane torch to set a fire, and walked away. Within minutes, an incandescent blaze was shooting out the door toward the wall. We could hear loud crackling; embers flew about. Soon, orange-red flames began to lick the wall and the roof’s open eaves. Smoke spiralled upward. The window frame, which was made from white vinyl, started melting and then ignited. Around ten minutes into the experiment, the eaves were burning. A glass window pane fell to the ground.

  • Mystery Object From ‘Space’ Strikes United Airlines Flight Over Utah

    [ad_1]

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed Sunday that it is investigating an airliner that was struck by an object in its windscreen, mid-flight, over Utah.

“NTSB gathering radar, weather, flight recorder data,” the federal agency said on the social media site X. “Windscreen being sent to NTSB laboratories for examination.”

The strike occurred Thursday, during a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles. Images shared on social media showed that one of the two large windows at the front of a 737 MAX aircraft was significantly cracked. Related images also reveal a pilot’s arm that has been cut multiple times by what appear to be small shards of glass.

    Object’s Origin Not Confirmed

The captain of the flight reportedly described the object that hit the plane as “space debris.” This has not been confirmed, however.

After the impact, the aircraft safely landed at Salt Lake City International Airport after being diverted.

Images of the strike showed that an object made a forceful impact near the upper-right part of the window, showing damage to the metal frame. Because aircraft windows are multiple layers thick, with laminate in between, the window pane did not shatter completely. The aircraft was flying above 30,000 feet—likely around 36,000 feet—and the cockpit apparently maintained its cabin pressure.

So was it space debris? It is impossible to know without more data. A very few species of birds can fly above 30,000 feet. However, the world’s highest flying bird, Rüppell’s vulture, is found mainly in Africa. An unregulated weather balloon is also a possibility, although it’s not clear whether the velocity would have been high enough to cause the kind of damage observed. Hail is also a potential culprit.

Assuming this was not a Shohei Ohtani home run ball, the only other potential cause of the damage is an object from space.

That was the initial conclusion of the pilot, but a meteor is more likely than space debris. Estimates vary, but a recent study in the journal Geology found that about 17,000 meteorites strike Earth in a given year. That is at least an order of magnitude greater than the amount of human-made space debris that survives reentry through Earth’s atmosphere.

A careful analysis of the glass and metal impacted by the object should be able to reveal its origin.
