Mexico‘s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, posted a tweet that many thought would be an April Fool’s Day joke, but it wasn’t. AMLO criticized the US government with a statement in which he even attacked the NBA, although he did not mention it by name.

AMLO’s tweet says: “They threaten to invade, sell high-powered weapons in their markets, do nothing for their young people, unfortunately suffer from the terrible and deadly pandemic of fentanyl, but do not address the causes. They are not concerned about well-being, only money, they do not strengthen moral, cultural and spiritual values; they do not even limit drug use, on the contrary, they encourage it even in sports. It is sad and decadent.”

Another tweet followed in which he shared an article from the Mexican newspaper El Universal, which reported that the NBA will allow the use of marijuana in its players. The Mexican president wrote: “This is what I mean. It is contradictory and hypocritical.”

AMLO’s tweet had thousands of comments

With over 950,000 views at the time of this report, the tweet had over 3,200 comments, many of them criticizing the president for meddling in the affairs of another country. One user commented: “And why should it be prohibited if its medicinal and recreational use is legal in much of the US?”

Another wrote: “Those who defend Cannabis, if it is natural and can be used for medicinal purposes, among other things, but I bet they know more than one person who started with it and ended up with…

The NBA will reportedly lift the ban on marijuana use as part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), one which is set to be approved soon and will last for seven years.

The last deal between the two parties included a clause stating that players who test positive to marijuana three times would be sanctioned for five games, and NBA players undergo drug tests around four times per season.

    Marijuana use in the NBA

JR Smith revealed last season that players used to smoke marijuana during the Bubble in Orlando after the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We was blowing it down in there,” JR Smith noted.

“You know what’s funny, though, is that that was the only way you could really function in that joint.

“It was cool, I’m glad it happened because it finally broke that barrier and that stigma that you couldn’t play and all of this. It was a drug, it was this and that.

“But when you go to the bubble basketball, some of them dudes… granted, it was like practice games and some of ’em really can’t play that well in front of 30,000… but at the same time you saw some of the best level of basketball.

“When you can be at peace with your mind, your body, and your soul, and you can go out there and just hoop, that’s all you want.”

Calls for the NBA to lift the marijuana ban

Since the Bubble, several players have called for the NBA to lift their ban on marijuana use.

“If you love it, you love it,” Durant told All The Smoke.

“If you don’t, you’re not even going to try it.

    “Marijuana is just…
