  • What to Stream: ‘The Smashing Machine,’ Louis Tomlinson, ‘The Beauty’ and Bruce Springsteen biopic

    [ad_1]

Dwayne Johnson transforming into MMA pioneer Mark Kerr for “The Smashing Machine” and Louis Tomlinson releasing his third solo album are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time this week, as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: Ryan Murphy’s new series “The Beauty” tackles beauty standards with some horror mixed in, Jeremy Allen White plays The Boss in “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” and Megadeth going out with a bang with their final, self-titled album.

Dwayne Johnson transformed into MMA pioneer Mark Kerr for “The Smashing Machine,” a surprisingly gentle drama about winning, addiction and self-worth, which is set to debut on HBO Max on Friday, Jan. 23. In his review, Associated Press Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote that the potency of Johnson’s performance is “let down by a movie that fails to really grapple with the violent world around Mark, resorting instead for a blander appreciation of these MMA combatants. What does resonate, though, is the portrait of a human colossus who learns to accept defeat.” Filmmaker Benny Safdie won a directing prize for his efforts at the Venice Film Festival, though the awards season spotlight has shifted to his brother, Josh, who made “Marty Supreme.”

    — HBO Max also has Judd Apatow’s “Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man!” arriving on Thursday. The two-part documentary includes interviews with Brooks himself as well as the likes of Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler and Conan O’Brien.

    — The Bruce Springsteen biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” is also making its streaming debut on Hulu and Disney+ on Friday, Jan. 23. Written and directed by Scott Cooper, the film stars Jeremy Allen White as The Boss during the making of the soulful “Nebraska” album. In his review for the AP, Mark Kennedy called it “an endearing, humbling portrait of an icon,” adding that it is almost a mirror of the album itself, “unexpected, complicated and very American gothic.”

    — A few other film festival gems are coming to more niche streamers too. The documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” a 2025 Sundance selection about a Russian teacher who secretly documents his classroom’s transformation into a military recruitment center during the invasion of Ukraine, is streaming on KINO Film on Thursday. And Mubi has Paolo Sorrentino’s “La Grazia” starting on Friday, Jan. 23. Star Toni Servillo won the best actor prize at Venice for his turn as a fictional Italian president.

    — You’d be right to call it a symphony for dissolution. Last summer, American thrash metal giants Megadeth announced they were going out with a bang. They’ll soon embark on a farewell tour, but before that, they will release their final album, the self-titled “Megadeth.” Pressure’s on, and they’re answering the call with their characteristically complex guitar work.

    — Perhaps best known as a candid and cool force in the gargantuan boy band One Direction, the Englishman Louis Tomlinson will release his third solo album on Friday, the existential “How Did I Get Here?” His work usually pulls from his most direct influences, Britpop chiefly among them on 2020’s “Walls” and 2022’s “Faith in the Future.” The “How Did I Get Here?” singles “Lemonade” and “Palaces” seem to suggest those influences are still present, but subtle now in favor of sunny, pop-rock choruses.

    — The great Lucinda Williams has returned with a new one titled “World’s Gone Wrong.” It is, of course, uniquely Williams — at the intersection of rock, Americana, country and folk — and stacked with inspirational collaborations from Norah Jones, Brittney Spencer and more. Those, partnered with a powerful rendition of Bob Marley’s “So Much Trouble In The World” with Mavis Staples, makes for a must-listen.

    AP Music Writer Maria Sherman

    — FX’s new series cocreated by Ryan Murphy tackles beauty standards with some horror mixed in. “The Beauty” features an all-star cast including Evan Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Pope, Anthony Ramos and Isabella Rossellini. Bella Hadid also guest stars. Kutcher plays a tech billionaire who has created a drug that can lead to so-called physical perfection but not without dangerous consequences. “The Beauty” is based on a comic book of the same name and premieres Wednesday on Hulu and Disney+ internationally.

“Drops of God” also returns Wednesday to Apple TV for its second season. It’s about two estranged siblings (played by Fleur Geffrier and Tomohisa Yamashita) competing to inherit their late father’s estate that comes with a massive wine collection. In Season 2, they must search for the source of an unlabelled bottle of wine believed to be the best in the world.

    — On the heels of the “Heated Rivalry” phenomenon, Netflix has its own love story to heat up the ice that premieres on Thursday. Where “Heated Rivalry” is based on a steamy romance book series, “Finding Her Edge” is adapted from a YA novel. It’s about a figure skater training for the world championships, who finds herself in a love triangle with her current and former skating partners.

    — Scott Foley and Erinn Hayes star in a new faith-based family drama called “It’s Not Like That,” coming to Prime Video on Sunday, January 25. Foley plays Malcolm, a pastor and father of three whose wife recently died and Hayes is Lori, a divorced mother of teenagers. Their families were always close but Malcolm and Lori find themselves relying on each other more and more as they navigate being single parents.

    Alicia Rancilio

    — Flynt Buckler, the hero of Escape from Ever After, lives in a storybook world. But that fantasy goes sour when a greedy corporation invades those books, turning them into cyberpunk dystopias and Lovecraftian nightmares. Can Flynt swashbuckle his way to the top, or will he settle for a crummy office cubicle? Developer Sleepy Castle Studio says it was inspired by Nintendo’s classic Paper Mario games, and the cartoonish 2D settings show off that influence. Turn the page Friday, Jan. 23, on Switch, Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5 or PC.

MIO: Memories in Orbit is another 2D adventure rooted in a Nintendo classic — in this case, Metroid, the mother of an entire subgenre. You are a small robot in an enormous starship called the Vessel, but your AI bosses have stopped working. It’s up to you to figure out what went wrong while fighting off rogue machines, and the more you explore, the more skills you gain. The ship’s sprawling innards have a hand-drawn, pastel look that you might not expect in a sci-fi game. Blast off Tuesday on Switch, Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5 or PC.

  • Box Office: ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ opens behind ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’

    [ad_1]

“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” may have scored well with critics, but slightly more moviegoing audiences chose to spend the holiday weekend catching up with “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” James Cameron’s epic topped the North American box office charts for the fifth straight weekend with $13.3 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Walt Disney Co. also celebrated another win as their Thanksgiving release “Zootopia 2” became the highest grossing animated Motion Picture Association release of all time.

Meanwhile “The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta, landed in second place with $13 million through Sunday. By the end of Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, it’s expected to be at $15 million, still trailing “Avatar’s” projected $17.2 million. The film, released by Sony Pictures and starring Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell, opened wide this weekend in 3,506 theaters on a wave of hype and strong reviews. It currently has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 72% of audiences said in a PostTrak poll that they would “definitely recommend” the movie. Considering it’s also solidly in the horror genre and arriving in January, often a dumping ground for lesser movies, “The Bone Temple” should have done better. Internationally, it made $16.2 million from 61 markets.

But perhaps in a case of too much too soon, the sequel also comes less than a year after the previous installment, “28 Years Later,” which opened to $30 million in June. Going into the weekend, “The Bone Temple” was expected to make at least $20 million through Monday. With a reported $63 million production budget, not including marketing and promotion, it also has a long journey to break even.

“It’s one of those head-scratchers,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for Comscore. “There may be a little bit of confusion from audiences. But word-of-mouth might sustain it in this marketplace, like we saw with ‘The Housemaid’ and ‘Zootopia 2.’”

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the team who started it all with “28 Days Later,” which came out in 2002, are also working on a third installment.

Third place went to “Zootopia 2,” with $8.8 million in its eighth weekend. With global grosses currently at $1.7 billion, it surpassed “Inside Out 2” as the highest grossing MPA animated release of all time. The MPA distinction means that the Chinese blockbuster “Ne Zha 2,” which has made over $2.2 billion, is not included in the rankings. “Zootopia 2” is also now the ninth biggest global release of all time

“The Housemaid,” one of the other major blockbusters of late, landed in fourth place with $8.5 million. Made for only $35 million, the Lionsgate release has grossed nearly $250 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was “Marty Supreme,” which became A24’s highest grossing North American release with a running gross of $79.7 million, unseating “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Josh Safdie’s mid-century adrenaline rush may get another boost after Oscar nominations are announced Thursday.

“Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers” were also back in theaters this weekend and both in the top 10, grossing $3.6 million and $2.4 million respectively.

Outside of the top 10, Focus Features’ “Hamnet,” which won best drama and best female actor for Jessie Buckley at the Golden Globes last weekend and is considered another top Oscar contender, expanded to 718 locations this weekend where it made $1.3 million through Sunday.

With final domestic figures being released Tuesday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore:

    1. “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” $13.3 million.

    2. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” $13 million.

    3. “Zootopia 2,” $8.8 million.

    4. “The Housemaid,” $8.5 million

    5. “Marty Supreme,” $5.5 million.

    6. “Primate,” $5 million.

    7. “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” $3.6 million.

    8. “Greenland 2: Migration,” $3.4 million.

    9. “Anaconda,” $3.2 million.

    10. “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” $2.4 million.

While attending the AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards, the veteran actor, 80, shared his thoughts with Fox News Digital about how the older generation is treated in the U.S. versus other countries.

“Well, you know, only in America is the more mature generation not completely embraced. And that’s where the wisdom comes from, I think. That’s who I learned from,” he said.

Winkler also touched on his friendship with fellow actor Adam Sandler and how they became friends.

  • ‘Heated Rivalry,’ ‘Bridgerton,’ and the Horny Comforts of a Cottage Romance

    [ad_1]

The cure for winter blues? Some good old-fashioned screen time, and maybe living vicariously through film and TV characters stealing away to a cottage for a romantic interlude.

In the finale of Heated Rivalry, titled “The Cottage,” Russian hockey player Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) tells Canadian fellow athlete Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams), “I’m coming to the cottage,” referring to the lakefront home where Shane invites Ilya to spend the offseason with him. On the surprise-hit show about a secret romance between rival hockey pros, Shane’s cottage offers a sanctuary away from prying eyes, allowing Ilya and Shane to test the waters on bringing their decade-long secret relationship out of the shadows. Outside, the pressures and risks of publicly revealing their relationship loom. But inside, they are untouched by such concerns, and therefore free to be together.

Ilya isn’t the only one who accepted an invitation to the cottage. Heated Rivalry, produced by the virtually unknown Canadian streamer Crave and then licensed by HBO Max, where it premiered in late November with little promotion, has become the talk of the town. Celebrities from Pedro Pascal to Ayo Edebiri have expressed love for the series on social media. “You’re Ilya and I’m Shane,” Andy Cohen told Anderson Cooper as they celebrated New Year’s Eve together on CNN. When asked what she was watching in a recent Instagram video, Donatella Versace replied, “Is that even a question? Take me to the cottage already.”

With no premiere date in sight for Heated Rivalry’s next installment, the fourth season of Bridgerton will offer audiences another cottage to visit when it arrives in two four-episode drops: the first on January 29, and the second on February 26. In the new season, Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) whisks Sophie (new cast member Yerin Ha) away to the Bridgerton family’s country estate, referred to as “my cottage,” after saving the maid from an assault by her new employer. Upon first seeing the palatial property, Sophie observes that “cottage feels somewhat…misleading.”

An already injured Benedict falls ill overnight, and Sophie nurses him back to health as they share the kind of intimate moments only afforded to them inside the confines of the cottage. When they return to polite society, with Benedict getting Sophie a job working for the Bridgerton family, they remain physically close but are emotionally distanced by social class. “I do miss our time in the countryside,” a uniformed Sophie opines.

  • Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment Enter New Worldwide Deal

    [ad_1]

Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment are furthering their relationship with a new, global Pay-1 deal. On Thursday (January 15), they announced that the multi-year agreement will allow Sony feature films to stream worldwide on Netflix. In an announcement from Netflix, this will be a first of its kind exclusice Pay-1 deal.

The new arrangement will roll out gradually, starting later this year. Officials expect full global availability on Netflix by early 2029. Netflix will also be licensing rights to select SPE feature films and television titles.

“Our members all over the world love movies, and giving them exclusive access to Sony’s much-loved films adds incredible value to their subscriptions,” said Lauren Smith, Vice President of Licensing and Programming Strategy at Netflix, in a press release. “Sony’s impressive slate of iconic film franchises like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and originals like Anyone But You have been popular with our U.S. audience, and now we’re excited to expand that offering to our members all around the world.”

The deal is an expansion of their 2021 deal, under which Sony films began on the streaming service. That deal was worth over $2 billion and set to expire at the end of 2026. In which, the new deal will kick into play starting in 2027 for the U.S.

“Our partnership with Netflix has always been incredibly valuable,” said Paul Littmann, EVP of Global Distribution, Sony Pictures Television. “This new Pay-1 deal takes that partnership to the next level and reinforces the enduring appeal of our theatrical releases to Netflix’s global audience. It also further underscores the strength of our independence and unique ability to create meaningful opportunities that benefit our creative stakeholders, consumers, and world-class partners.”

This new deal comes during a crazy time for Netflix. The streaming service is in the middle of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery in another billion-dollar deal.

  • James Cameron Wants to Bring Michelle Yeoh to Pandora

    [ad_1]

    Photo: Raymond Hall/GC Images

Everyone wants Michelle Yeoh involved in their movies, and who could blame them? She’s the originator of the “Madame Morrible, MM, flip it around, Wicked Witch!” who knows what else her mind could come up with on another movie set. James Cameron has been hoping to bring Yeoh onto Pandora and has found the perfect opportunity to bring her on board for Avatar 4, if there is one. “Michelle is definitely going to be in 4, if we make 4,” Cameron shares to TVBS News, per People. He already has a vision in store for her: she would be a Na’vi named Paktuelat, but didn’t specify what tribe she would be a part of. Cameron has already conquered land, sea, and fire in the world of Pandora, but maybe there’s a tribe of Na’vi living underground. The official X account for the Avatar films previously stated that Yeoh would play a character named Dr. Karina Mogue. But it might be possible that Cameron thought of another role for her, or maybe she transforms into a Na’vi, like how Jake Sully did in the first film.

Despite making over $1 billion globally, Cameron is still concerned about whether a fourth film would be approved by Disney. “So, here’s the thing: the movie industry is depressed right now. Avatar 3 cost a lot of money. We have to do well in order to continue. We have to do well, and we need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively in order to continue,” he explains. Either way, maybe Yeoh can at least act out her part in the press conference Cameron promises to host if the fourth and fifth movies don’t get made.

  • Kathleen Kennedy, steward of ‘Star Wars,’ steps down from Lucasfilm

    [ad_1]

After more than 13 years at the helm of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from the “Star Wars” factory founded by George Lucas.

The Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday that it will now turn to Dave Filoni to steer “Star Wars” into its sixth decade and beyond. Filoni, who served as the chief commercial officer of Lucasfilm, and Lynwen Brennan, president and general manager of Lucasfilm’s businesses, will inherit the mantle of one of the movies’ marquee franchises.

Kennedy, Lucas’ handpicked successor, had presided over the ever-expanding science-fiction world of “Star Wars” since Disney acquired it in 2012. She oversaw a highly lucrative but often contentious period in “Star Wars” history that yielded a blockbuster trilogy and acclaimed streaming spinoffs such as “The Mandalorian” and “Andor,” yet found increasing frustration from longtime fans.

Under Kennedy’s stewardship, Lucasfilm amassed more than $5.6 billion in box office and helped establish Disney+ as a streaming destination — achievements that easily validated the $4.05 billion Disney plunked down for the company. But Kennedy also struggled to deliver the big-screen magic that Lucas captured in the original trilogy from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and her relationship with “Star Wars” loyalists became a saga of its own.

While Filoni and Brennan will share leadership, Brennan is considered the more financially oriented executive. Filoni will have the creative reins. He’s established himself almost entirely on the small screen, entering the franchise with the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and creating the tepidly received Disney+ series “Ahsoka.” Filoni, who first collaborated with Lucas on “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” has also been an executive producer on “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Skeleton Crew.”

Before joining Lucasfilm, Kennedy was one of Hollywood’s most successful producers ever. In 1981, she co-founded Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and her eventual husband, Frank Marshall. She produced “E.T.,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “Jurassic Park” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy.

At Lucasfilm, her biggest hit came at the start, with 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The J.J. Abrams-directed film grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. But the subsequent installment, Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” (2017), was bitterly divisive. The third film, Abrams’ “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019), was widely panned by critics and fans, alike.

After “The Rise of Skywalker,” “Star Wars” went dark on the big screen despite a litany of announced projects. The dry spell is set to be broken in May by Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” The intervening years have been marked by streaming successes in “The Mandalorian” and “Andor,” but the future of “Star Wars” has felt increasingly uncertain.

Struggles over tone and vision have been frequent. The 2018 Han Solo spinoff “Solo: A Star Wars Story” saw its directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, fired during production and replaced by Ron Howard. Most found the mixed-and-matched result blandly disappointing.

More recently, Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the most recent “Star Wars” trilogy,” divulged to The Associated Press last year that he and Steven Soderbergh had developed a Ben Solo film with Kennedy and Lucasfilm’s support for two years before Disney chief Bob Iger nixed it. Fans were so irate that a plane was flown over Disney’s Burbank studios with a banner reading “Save ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo.’”

Instead, the only “Star Wars” movie of Kennedy’s stewardship to win widespread and prevailing approval from fans was arguably 2016’s “Rogue One.” Gareth Edwards’ spinoff was also a troubled production, leading to Tony Gilroy, eventual creator of “Andor,” overseeing reshoots. Yet despite that, “Rogue One” — taking place within “Star Wars” but outside of the main Jedi storyline — might be the only film of Kennedy’s “Star Wars” reign that managed to both stay true to the space odyssey’s tone and to break new ground.

  • Robert Davi claims Hollywood blacklist persists over Trump support

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

After previously saying that he felt blacklisted by Hollywood due to his support for President Donald Trump that began in 2015, Robert Davi this week said he feels like it’s continuing “to some extent.”

“It’s still ongoing, but it might be lightening up, I think,” the “Die Hard” actor told Raymond Arroyo on his “Arroyo Grande” podcast. “I don’t know, and it’s among certain elements of the industry. In other words, you’ll never know exactly where the button gets pushed.”

Davi said many times his manager will tell him someone is interested in him for a project, then it doesn’t come through because he suspects “it goes up the flagpole to somebody and then, all of a sudden, it gets wiped out, but it absolutely is because there’s no reason for it.”

But, he said there’s no way of gauging how many projects he’s lost because of his political leanings, especially since he knows there’s some he never even hears about.

Robert Davi said there’s no way of knowing how many opportunities he’s missed out on because of his political leanings. (Joshua Blanchard/Getty Images for Politicon)

He also revealed that he was twice asked to endorse liberal candidates.

“In 2016, some execs came to me and said, ‘Hey, if you now support so-and-so, name your ticket, and that happened twice, two different elections,” he said, but his quick answer was “Why would I do that?”

An outspoken conservative, Davi said he gets frustrated with “closeted” conservatives in the industry.

“If they — and there’s some powerful ones — and if they did come forward, if they had the courage to come forward, it would help many others that are closeted,” he said.

Davi added that people come up to him all the time to tell him that they follow him on social media, and thank him for what he’s been saying.

Invoking Frank Sinatra, he said that if the Rat Pack crooner liked someone, “they had a little bit of influence” because of their connection to him.

“So celebrities do have — even though they want to say celebrities have no [influence], they do. They have some kind of effect on the younger generation, in people that are influenced,” he continued.

The “Goonies” actor said he felt if he stayed quiet about his views, “there’s going to be people out there that are going to feel even more isolated.”

Even if fans come up to him and say they enjoyed his work but are now disappointed in his political leanings, he told Arroyo that he explains to them his views don’t change the work he’s done.

“As opposite ends of the spectrum as I am to Robert De Niro, I’ll go see a film that he’s in,” he revealed. “I won’t not go see a film,” he explained, adding that his daughter had them watching De Niro’s 2009 movie “Everybody’s Fine” over the holidays, which he said has a “terrific message.”

He joked as he was watching the film he thought, “I forgive him.”

  • Mattel and Alex Aster team up for Barbie young adult novel, ‘Barbie: Dreamscape’

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK — The publishing arm of Mattel Inc. is teaming with million-selling novelist Alex Aster on a Barbie young adult novel in which the iconic doll embarks on a journey across “treacherous, magical lands.”

“Barbie: Dreamscape,” scheduled for July 28, is the first novel for young adults out of Mattel Publishing since the imprint was announced three years ago. The novel is not tied to the blockbuster 2023 “Barbie” movie and no screen adaptation is currently planned, according to Mattel.

The toy and family entertainment company is calling Aster’s book a “coming-of-age story” that finds Barbie declared “Fateless” at the graduation ceremony of the “enchanted” Swancrest Academy.

“To earn a Fate, she must journey across treacherous, magical lands in search of the mysterious beings who control the destinies of everyone in Heartland — and the buried truths that could change her world forever,” Thursday’s announcement reads in part. “Because to forge her own path, Barbie must step out of the box … and into the unknown.”

The publishing imprint is focused on Mattel’s “extensive catalog of children’s and family entertainment franchises,” including Barbie, Hot Wheels and Polly Pocket. Earlier this week, Mattel Inc. announced it had created an autistic Barbie doll, part of the Fashionistas line committed to diversity.

Aster, a social media favorite best known for her “Lightlark” series and for the adult novel “Summer in the City,” said in a statement that Barbie dolls were a formative part of her childhood.

“I spent countless hours making up stories starring each of my dolls, and I still remember the excitement of opening a new box, adding another character to my tales, marveling at each accessory,” she said.

  • Ben Affleck Praises Best Friend and Costar Matt Damon at The Rip Premiere

    [ad_1]

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon really are best friends forever.

Affleck, 53, and Damon, 55, reunited at the Tuesday, January 13, premiere of their new film The Rip in New York City, opening up about what they are learning and relearning about each other as they continue to work together over the years.

“I keep relearning things about Matt that I already knew and I forget them,” Affleck, 53, joked to Us Weekly exclusively before getting serious about their decades-long friendship. “Honestly, I am continuously reminded of what a great father he is and what a fabulous actor he is.”

Affleck added that it’s “fun” he and Damon get to navigate their careers together. “You’re really lucky if you can do this for a living,” he said. “And you’re exceptionally lucky if you can do it with people you love and care about.”

Related: Matt Damon Says Wife Luciana Thought Ben Affleck Was Cuter Than Him

Matt Damon has been married to his wife, Luciana Barroso, for more than 20 years — but turns out her eyes were initially drawn to his best friend Ben Affleck. “This is f****ing completely true,” Damon, 55, began during the Monday, January 12, episode of The Howard Stern Show after being asked if Affleck, 53, […]

Damon then jokingly ribbed his BFF to “keep going” with the kind words, causing Affleck to reply, “Yeah, pick that money up and put in my back pocket!”

The ride-or-die duo have been together since they wrote and starred in 1997’s Oscar-winning drama Good Will Hunting. They have since gone on to collaborate together on multiple projects throughout the years, both in front of and behind the camera. The Rip serves as their most recent project, which follows a group of Miami cops who, after discovering a stash of millions in cash, start to question who they can rely on.

“These are people who don’t make a lot of money. And it’s about going out and doing an honest day’s work, and the integrity and the meaning of that,” Affleck explained of the film during a Monday, January 12, appearance on The Howard Stern Show. “[They’re] under-appreciated, under suspicion often, and underfunded.”

The pair also reflected on experiencing the highs and lows of fame while speaking to Stern, 72, noting that they feel lucky that they’ve had each other to lean on throughout their 40 years in the spotlight.

“Getting famous and successful kind of together, [we had] somebody to turn to and go ‘is this f***ing nuts, or what?’ Or to say ‘what are you doing, man?’” Affleck shared, to which Damon replied, “We hit the lottery. We hit it together.”

That remains true for their personal lives, as well. When asked if he’d been there for Affleck when he was going through “all his problems,” including his divorces and substance abuse issues, Damon told Stern he’s stood by his friend’s side for “all of it.”

Affleck was previously married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018 and the pair share three children together: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13. They wed in 2022 but divorced after two years of marriage. Affleck has also been open about his struggles with alcohol over the years.

“Could you go to Ben and say, ‘I’m here to help you?’” Stern asked Damon, who didn’t hesitate in his reply. “Oh, yeah, our relationship isn’t affected by what people are saying.”

Affleck, for his part, shared how appreciative he is of having Damon in his life. “That means a lot to me,” he told The Odyssey actor. “That’s sort of what a real friend is.”

Damon has been married to wife Luciana Barroso since 2005 and the couple share four daughters: Alexia, 25, Isabella, 19, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15. When speaking with Stern on Monday, Damon confessed that Barroso initially thought Affleck was the “cute one”of the two when watching Good Will Hunting and before meeting Damon in person.

The trio have since worked together on multiple projects, with Barroso serving as a producer on The Rip. She is also set to l co-produce Affleck’s next directorial project, Animals. Despite the awkward first impressions, Affleck told Stern that they’ve all since become great friends and he’s beared witness to how strong Damon and Barroso are as a couple since the start.

“It’s a really gorgeous marriage and friendship and two people who when they’re apart and independent of one another are one another’s partner,” Affleck shared of Damon and Barroso’s 20-year union. “I have a feeling it’s improved.”

  • Nikki Glaser avoided political jokes while hosting Golden Globes because they’re ‘not funny’

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Nikki Glaser revealed why she steered clear of politics while hosting the 83rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony Sunday night.

During an appearance Tuesday on Sirirus XM’s “The Howard Stern Show,” the 41-year-old comedian, who received overwhelmingly positive reviews for her second consecutive turn as the Golden Globes emcee, explained the absence of political jabs in her opening monologue.

“It’s not funny,” she said. “I was going to come in at some point and say, ‘I’m hearing from the bar that we’re out of ice. And you know, we don’t really need ice. And actually, I hate ice.’ It just felt like, ‘Oh, even that’s just being too trivial.’ That’s what it felt like. This isn’t even that anymore. It’s hard to strike the right tone.”

Nikki Glaser explained why she left political jokes out of the Golden Globes ceremony.  (Rich Polk/2026GG/Penske Media via Getty Images)

Glaser told Stern, 72, that comedy legend Steve Martin wrote a joke for her that mentioned President Donald Trump but later asked her to scrap it.

GOLDEN GLOBES HOST NIKKI GLASER NAMES THE ONE HOLLYWOOD STAR ‘YOU CANNOT MAKE FUN OF’

“[My writer] said, ‘Hey, Steve sent in a joke.’ And he read it to me,” Glaser recalled. “And later on he said, ‘Steve said don’t do that. It’s not the right tone for the night.’ And he was right.”

The “Trainwreck” actress explained that the axed joke referred to the renaming of Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center to include Trump’s name. Last month, the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees unanimously decided to rename the building The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.

Shortly after, crews installed Trump’s name on the building’s exterior signage and the center’s website was updated with the new branding.

“It was some version of ‘I just got back from D.C. from performing at the Trump Kennedy Center,’” Glaser recalled of Martin’s joke. “It was something about [the] Trump Kennedy Center. And here I’m at the Trump Beverly Hilton. It was something about that.

“And it was like, you just don’t wanna say that guy’s name,” she said. “I just don’t wanna give it space.”

Glaser said she also nixed a joke about the nominees’ demographics after deciding it was “too woke.”

She told Stern the joke was “Martin Short, Jeremy Allen White, Gary Oldman: these are three actors nominated tonight. Actually, short, white, old men are also most of the actors nominated tonight.”

“And that was just cut because it felt too woke,” Glaser said. “It was clever, but it wasn’t funny.”

While Glaser opted to avoid overtly political jabs, she did include quips about two hot-button topics that have received extensive media coverage, including the Epstein files and CBS News’ recent controversy.

During her monologue, Glaser referenced convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to celebrities without directly mentioning the late billionaire’s name.

“I cannot believe the amount of star power we have in this room tonight. It’s insane. There’s so many A-listers,” Glaser said during the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. “And by A-listers, I do mean people who are on a list that has been heavily redacted.

“And the Golden Globe for best editing goes to the Justice Department,” she added.

During Glaser’s interview with Stern, the shock jock praised her for mocking CBS News despite the Golden Globes airing on CBS.

“And the award for ‘most editing’ goes to CBS News. Yes, CBS News, America’s newest place to see BS news,” Glaser joked at the Golden Globes.

Over the past year, CBS has experienced several controversies and new ownership that led to new leadership, which have some critics accusing the network of losing its credibility.

CBS has faced backlash from some liberal commentators after its parent company, Paramount, reached a $16 million settlement with Trump and has been accused of acquiescing to the Trump administration through Paramount’s new CEO, David Ellison.

Ellison has focused on revitalizing CBS News since becoming CEO, installing The Free Press founder Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief in October.

Several progressive commentators have also slammed Weiss for making significant decisions behind the scenes, including pulling a “60 Minutes” segment about allegations of abuses at the notorious El Salvador prison CECOT just hours before it was scheduled to air.

After the Golden Globes aired, several critics pointed out that the ceremony was notably apolitical compared to recent years. Trump’s name was not directly invoked by Glaser, presenters or winners during the award show’s broadcast.

Any political commentary was mostly relegated to red carpet interviews ahead of the ceremony, where both nominee Mark Ruffalo, winner Jean Smart and presenter Wanda Sykes took the opportunity to share their thoughts on current affairs.

Ruffalo, Smart and Sykes were also among the celebrities who wore pins with slogans that said, “BE GOOD” and “ICE OUT.” The pins, which were also sported by Ariana Grande, Natasha Lyonne and others, were intended as a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement days after the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good.

  • Matt Damon says Clint Eastwood shut him down on ‘Invictus,’ asking ‘why waste everybody’s time?’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Matt Damon remembered being put in his place by one of Hollywood’s finest as he reminisced on his decades-long career.

During an appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, the Oscar-winner revealed that Clint Eastwood had a few choice words for the actor while they worked together on the 2009 docudrama “Invictus.”

While running down the list of directors Damon worked with, O’Brien admitted he couldn’t get a sense of Eastwood’s style.

Damon spent six months working with a dialect coach to master the accent, with little interest from his director.

“It was a long … it was a lot of work,” Damon said. “And I showed up and, and I’m, I’m ready. It’s like my chance to work with, you know, one of my heroes.”

Damon continued, “The very first take, I did it. And meanwhile, I’ve done this so many thousands of times. I have a number of different ways that I’m thinking of maybe doing the scene. So he goes, ‘Cut, print, move on.’

While Eastwood’s words may have seemed off-putting, the “Bourne Identity” actor insisted there was a “kindness” to his message.

“He is a lovely guy. What was really interesting is the second movie I did with him, there was this … it builds to a head with this, a scene with me and this 9-year-old kid,” Damon said. “The 9-year-old kid was a non-actor, and we had done one take for everybody, all through ‘Invictus.’

“We must have done 40 takes with this little boy … we were trying to get this; it was this kind of huge moment in the film, and we were trying to get this stuff out of him. Clint was right next to me … like, we were right next to the camera together just working with this boy.”

He added, “His whole mentality was … your crew will go to the ends of the earth for you if as long as you’re not taxing them on every shot. When we need to get in there, we get in there. But for the most part we can … professional actors are gonna show up with something good. We keep the momentum.”

  • Paramount’s next target in hostile takeover bid of Warner Bros. is a board of its own making

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK — Paramount Skydance is taking another step in its hostile takeover bid of Warner Bros. Discovery, saying Monday that it will name its own slate of directors before the next shareholder meeting of the Hollywood studio.

Paramount also filed a suit in Delaware Chancery Court seeking to compel Warner Bros. to disclose to shareholders how it values its bid and the competing offer from Netflix.

Warner Bros. is in the middle of a bidding war between Paramount and Netflix. Warner’s leadership has repeatedly rebuffed overtures from Skydance-owned Paramount — and urged shareholders to back the sale of its streaming and studio business to Netflix for $72 billion. Paramount, meanwhile, has made efforts to sweeten its $77.9 billion hostile offer for the entire company.

Last week, Warner Bros. Discovery said its board determined Paramount’s offer is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders. It again recommended shareholders support the Netflix deal.

David Ellison, the chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance, said Monday that it’s committed to seeing through its tender offer. “We do not undertake any of these actions lightly,” he said in a letter to shareholders of Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has yet to schedule its annual meeting or a special meeting to consider the Netflix offer, and Paramount did not name any potential candidates for the board.
