Mint Hill authorities converged on a shopping center Friday, Dec. 26, 2025. Two officers were shot, and a suspect is dead, officials said.

Two officers shot at a Mint Hill shopping center Friday will be released from the hospital Saturday, state Rep. Tricia Cotham said in a Friday night Facebook post.
“Praise be to God that the Mint Hill Police Department officers will make a full recovery and be released from the hospital tomorrow,” Cotham stated in her post. “Our heartfelt prayers and deepest gratitude remain with these selfless heroes, their families and the entire department.”
Mint Hill Police Department had not confirmed this information as of early Saturday afternoon.
The two officers were shot Friday morning after being called to an incident regarding a child custody exchange at the Mint Hill Commons shopping center in the 6800 block of Matthews-Mint Hill Road, officials said Friday.
A man who fired at the officers was shot and killed at the scene, police said. His name has not yet been made public.
Both officers were initially in critical condition but, by Friday afternoon, were in stable condition at area hospitals, officials announced. Neither officer has so far been publicly identified.
There’s been an outpouring of prayers and support for the injured officers on social media, from residents as well as other public officials.
“My prayers are with them and their families for their full recovery,” Gov. Josh Stein posted on Facebook Friday. “Our officers run toward danger every day to keep us all safe. We must do all we can to support them.”
U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis posted that he and his wife were praying for the injured officers. “Our hearts are with their families and fellow officers. God Bless all those who serve and protect.”
