A man faces felony domestic violence charges for allegedly assaulting a woman in Meriden in May, striking her with a vehicle and stabbing her multiple times.
Shawn Samuel, 33, was charged last Friday with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, attempted second-degree assault and first-degree unlawful restraint, according to Lt. Darrin McKay of the Meriden Police Department.
The charges stem from a stabbing reported on May 31 at 11:09 p.m. when officers were dispatched to the rear parking lot area of the North Tower at 55 Willow St. on the report of an assault in progress. Police located a woman who appeared to have suffered serious stab wounds, McKay said. She was taken to Hartford Hospital for trauma treatment.
Police secured a crime scene in the rear lot of the North Tower and turned the investigation over to the department’s Major Crimes Unit.
According to McKay, surveillance footage reportedly showed an argument had ensued between a man and the woman. Before the stabbing, the man allegedly assaulted the woman, forcefully took items from her and drove a vehicle into her, McKay said.
During the investigation, McKay said investigators established a nexus between the woman and Samuel, developing him as a suspect.
On June 5, Samuel was taken into custody in New Haven by members of the New Haven Police Department with assistance from the Branford Police Department, McKay said. He was remanded into custody by his parole officer based on the onsite charges he faced, according to McKay.
Samuel was later charged with narcotics offenses after a search and seizure warrant was carried out on his vehicle, McKay said. Meriden investigators were then able to obtain a warrant charging him in the assault.
Samuel was charged in the assault during an appearance in Meriden Superior Court. His bond in the case was set at $750,000.
“The Meriden Police Department is committed to combating domestic violence,” McKay said in a statement. “These types of crimes are not acceptable and will always be taken very seriously. All available resources will be provided to the victims of these incidents, as well as used to take the offenders off the streets.”
