PEABODY — An antique piano has found a new home at Bishop Fenwick High School.

The piano was donated to the school by Manchester-by-the-Sea resident Joe Sabella and his family last year. Over 80 years old, the piano is a family heirloom his late mother, Mildred Sabella, loved to play in her Long Island home.

Joe Sabella’s daughter, Kimberly, graduated from Fenwick in 2000. The piano sat largely unused in their home after she moved to California.

That changed this month. After being decorated by Class of ‘99 alumnus Patrick Freeman, students played the instrument during a concert at the Fenwick Night at the Arts on May 14. Nearly 25 students were also honored that night for their outstanding work in the arts.

Freemen is the artist in residence at Sing for Hope, a New York City-based nonprofit where artists vibrantly decorate old pianos that are then moved to public spaces like schools and hospitals to be played by anyone who comes across them.

TOPSFIELD — Each year, the Bee School sets up shop at the Topsfield Fairgrounds for several weeks.

The program is run by the Essex County Beekeepers’ Association as an introductory course for beginning beekeepers and others with an interest in bees. The class fills up every year and this year was no exception. Bee School started in mid-February and ran for nine weeks on Tuesday evenings through mid-April.

Practical beekeeping is designed to provide students, with no previous knowledge or experience with beekeeping, the necessary information and skills to keep honeybees and produce honey and beeswax. The course includes instruction on bee biology, required equipment, setting up bee hives, acquiring and installing bees, managing bees through the seasons, and harvesting bee products. A key part of the course is introducing the students to mentors who help guide the students through their first years of keeping bees.

Additionally, the ECBA offers ongoing opportunities to educate beekeepers at its monthly meetings. In the summer, ECBA members host “hive openings” where bee hives are opened and inspected for the education of other members.
