  • Aurora, Lakeview students join Chicago-area school walkouts to protest immigration enforcement

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) — Chicago and suburban students joining others across the state and nationwide protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday morning.

A walkout at Lake View High School got underway as students in Aurora also walked out of school on Friday.

The demonstrations come after more than 1,500 students participated in a walkout earlier this week in Aurora, where things got contentious between students and police.

Officers arrested three East Aurora High School students, one of whom is also charged with aggravated battery to a police officer.

Protesters say officers used excessive force while police say the students did not follow commands, walked out into the street, and resisted. Multiple officers were injured in the protest.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office is now conducting an independent review of that situation.

Because of this, Aurora school superintendents released a video, urging parents to encourage their kids to stay in the classroom on Friday for their safety.

“When students leave campus, we cannot ensure their safety. Outside groups may join. Large gatherings can escalate. Law enforcement resources may be stretched if multiple schools are involved. These are real concerns,” the video says.

Students on Chicago’s North Side marched to the North Center Town Square.

Other student walkouts were also planned in Bolingbrook, Addison, and Elmhurst on Friday.

Chicago Public Schools issued a statement, saying, “Chicago Public Schools (CPS) remains committed to fostering learning environments that allow students to respectfully deliberate issues with evidence and an open mind – and safely participate in civic action.

It is appropriate in classes or special school events to create an environment where students of all viewpoints feel that they can express themselves in a safe and respectful environment.

In the event that students want to participate in civic action, school administrators work with student organizers to designate an appropriate, safe space for students to convene for a group activity. CPS allows for students to participate in planned civic actions, including walkouts or protests, for a period of time during the school day, according to CPS guidance.”

  • Patrons replace Lakeview bar’s ‘giving tree’ presents stolen in burglary caught on camera

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — The owners of a North Side bar have organized charity drives and offered meals for those in need, including at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now, neighbors are giving back after a break-in caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

At Lakeview watering hole Olive Black, a community is stepping up. Days before Christmas, neighbors are lifting up this business that they say embodies the meaning of the holidays.

“Coming together goes such a long way, and while there are a lot of lows in this world, there’s many, many more highs,” said bar patron Jeremy Bressman.

Community members organized a benefit night to support Olive Black days after the cocktail bar near Lincoln and Southport was burglarized.

“They broke the door open, and the very first thing that they hit was the ATM,” said Olive Black co-owner Wendy Prinn.

Surveillance video from last Thursday morning shows four thieves in masks and hoodies rocking the ATM until it unbolted from the floor. The group then carried it out of the business to a waiting car.

“They weren’t leaving without that ATM,” Prinn said.

But bar owner Prinn says what happened next left her stunned. The thieves stole donated presents from beneath the bar’s giving tree. They were meant for families in need.

“They didn’t even grab the bags and go. They just kind of shuffled through them to figure out what was in them and took what they wanted,” Prinn said. “Why are you going to steal from babies? And that’s the majority of what was there, is baby clothes and diapers and things like that.”

So, on Tuesday, neighbors toasted the bar and replaced those gifts that were stolen.

“We need to just take care of each other,” said bar patron Carol Ann Bliss. “Out of bad always comes good. Well, not always, but typically, and it’s just important to give back.”

“My community has always been amazing, but they’ve stepped up even more this year,” Prinn said.

Prinn says the break-in has shaken her sense of safety, and so neighbors have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for a new security gate.

  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students to attend audience with Chicago native Pope Leo at Vatican

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — On a beautiful Tuesday evening in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, excitement is building for a group of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students, who are getting ready for Wednesday’s papal audience.

An ABC7 crew was on the flight with some of those students and Cardinal Blase Cupich. From the gate at O’Hare Airport to their tour of Vatican City and Rome, their energy is only growing.

Swapping Lakeview for Vatican views, the students part of a class project gone viral are now walking the same places and spaces of the Catholic cardinals they once dressed up as.

“I get emotional when I think about it,” said Allison Foerster, who teaches at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy. “This feels like such a gift to get to be a part of this, to get to be a part of the team that puts together something like this for our students.”

And on Wednesday, they will get to stand in St. Peter’s Square as their hometown pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, addresses the general audience.

“We have no expectation of what will happen. We are just coming in faith and in joy to be in his presence and see what happens,” Foerster said.

On Monday, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students in Rome took part in a special tour of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, getting a chance to see the tomb of Paul the Apostle.

“I don’t want to leave. I want to learn more, but I can’t, because we have to go see other stuff,” said fifth-grader Max Schnakenberg.

Schnakenberg, 10, says the time between first putting on his conclave costume to being able to walk into walls of Vatican City was fast.

“They were like ‘Hey guys, we’re going to make our own conclave.’ And now, ‘Hey, were going to meet the pope.’ Like, that’s a big jump,” Schnakenberg said. “Coming here, to Rome, is insane itself. Meeting the pope is a whole other level.”

Chicago native Pope Leo showed off his catching skills at a special greeting for Croatian pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on Monday.

It is still anyone’s guess if these students will get more than just a general audience with the Holy Father.

But for Foerster, one the teachers who envisioned the idea of the mock conclave, says this trip itself is a blessing she and her fellow teachers never imagined.

“They’re really looking forward to just being a part of the experience. We know that no matter what, we get to see him and that in itself feels like such a gift,” Foerster said. “To be able to be here doing this, knowing this is a watershed moment for our church for our school… It’s such a gift to get be a part of this community, and to get to teach these sweet young people and to know that this is going to be a life-changing moment for them.”

Meanwhile, ABC News has learned the pope will make his first foreign trip.

The Vatican told reporters that Pope Leo XIV will travel to Turkey and Lebanon. His trip is set for late November into December.
